I definitely agree with you that assuming based on fic (or art or whatever other fandom product) can backfire easily. The characters I like to see hurt the most are also my favourites, after all. :p
*In case it isn't obvious, I am super socially awkward and do most of my actual fandom-related socializing with a smallish group of people in meatspace. Thus, I'm genuinely unclear on how likely this is to happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 03:22 am (UTC)(link)Honestly, most of the people in the fandom circles I'm in tend to just be more 'Yeah, I don't really like/care for/really really dislike X' when the topic comes up, and leave it at that, and the topic of conversation changes unless it's a character that most people will make automatic assumptions about, and those times it's usually a totally reasonable reason.
That said, my fandom friends tend to have a standing agreement of 'If someone doesn't like X character/pairing, then I just won't talk about it with them' and vice versa.

The way you all do it sounds reasonable to me. It's just kind of opposite among my peeps (in that the default is usually, "I don't like [x] because [simplified reason]" followed by either the subject being dropped or a more in-depth discussion depending on what the people involved seem to be comfortable with at the moment), so the comments hinging on the assumption that you really have to dig to know seemed odd to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 03:59 am (UTC)(link)But, if it helps, what I've seen from fandom at large, people tend not to explain *why* the dislike a character unless they're bashing.

It's also not just related to a general dislike of a character. Reasons for liking personality traits can be just as varied. I used to share a favourite character with another person in my fandom, and she liked the character for all the traits I considered flaws, endorsing them, and vice versa, and lo and behold, in time it turned out that we have pretty much opposite world views in general too. What a surprise!
