Is there some other way people express sadness other than frowning? He has the same 'about to cry but don't want to face' I have seen on other people.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Some people can do it with their eyes more than their mouth. Martin Freeman in this episode is a good example.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's Benedict Cumberbach, his face is ALWAYS funny.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it is. It seems more like a caricature of a frowning face then an actual frowning face.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love you, OP.

Well, everyone more or less thinks that he was putting the whole thing on as an act so I think when watched with hindsight (once S3 airs) it's supposed to feel less genuine.

If that helps.

No, not "everyone". Maybe a lot of people, but not everyone.

In his defense, the majority of people who start sobbing have rather funny faces as they break down in tears; screwing up their faces, getting puffy eyed, snot-nosed etc. Myself included.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have the 'Sexy Cry' you see in a lot of movies and TV shows when a single tear falls but nothing else on their face moves at all.

Still not as bad as Ianto in Torchwood though.

Not everyone can do the Jensen Ackles 'One Manly Tear' cry.

THIS!

Seriously, this is one of the biggest reasons emotional scenes in movies and television don't do anything for me. When people really are crying, they don't look like supermodels with perfect makeup.

This is what I always think too. My crying face must be tragically awful and unattractive, so I don't see what the big deal is with people not being able to 'cry pretty'. Some people get lucky and can, some can't, but not being able to do so is very normal.

As for the actual secret...I sob at this scene every damn time, but then again I cry easy. Different people find different things funny too. *shrugs*

Come on somebody, post a pic of Grumpy Cat!

Contrary to fangirl popular opinion, that guy IMO looks like a washed out ghost with dark hair.

Exactly.

Actually I only find him attractive with dark hair. Then again I only find him attractive with dark hair sometimes. Mainly when he is moving. He is one of those types that only looks attractive when moving (like Channing Tatum).

I like Ben with dark hair but I prefer it lighter. He does look a bit washed out. I've thought the same thing of Tom Hiddleston with his dark Loki hair. I much prefer the ginger curls!

I thought it looked a little silly, but some people look silly when they're angry or upset. Some people look pretty ridiculous when they're sobbing, myself included.
I thought it looked pretty natural, in that respect, his face going all undignified like that. I think he's either genuinely crying there or faking it really well.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah same here. I thought it was a great moment. Not pretty, but genuine.

All right, I'll say it here: "The Reichenbach Fall" was incoherent and terrible. I wasn't just disappointed, I was mad at it, most particularly for all the very stupid "smart" people. I just hope series three is better than that, because had that been my first exposure, I'd've never looked again, and I sat through four - four! - episodes of Revolution hoping that would start to make sense on any level whatsoever. So I have a fair amount of tolerance, but this exhausted it before the end of the second act.

Really, I sum my whole reaction to this episode thusly:

I couldn't get sad at that scene because I knew Sherlock had to have a trick up his sleeve. I was just waiting to see what it was, I'll be forever disappointed if they go with cop out next season, like Irene calling off Moriarty.
I felt bad for John though because he didn't know.
