Wait. 'Tangled' lived up to the hype? Really? Personally, I thought it was terrible, but to each their own.

I thought it was fun. Except for Flynn Rider.

I hated Flynn.

My mom hated Flynn.

My dad hated Flynn.

My boyfriends hated Flynn.

My imaginary dog hated Flynn.

Everyone hates Flynn.

That's a strange way to spell Applejack!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Flynn.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, I thought Flynn was a pain in the ass to start with, but wasn't that the point? I liked him. He was a surprisingly unstuffy, flawed "hero" for a Disney film. (I think this is a Disney film...)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, not everyone hates Flynn. Love him.

I loved Flynn. 'Course, he was an irritating jackass at the beginning, but that was kinda the point of his character -- developing from an irritating jackass to a mature and heroic guy.

I shipped Flynn with the horse.

I liked him.

Yea, this.

I was not impressed. The only good song was 'Mother Knows Best' and even that lacks serious epic-ness in the Villain Song department. The story itself wasn't really all that magical either. Meh.

There was a ~hint~ of epic-ness on the 'Mother Knows Best' reprise when she sings 'I won't say I told you so', but other than that... yeah. I was let down a bit on the song department. I actually prefer the Kingdom Dance instrumental section to any of the actual songs.

Yeeeeeah, it didn't do much for me either, despite coming into the theater with zero expectations. I mean, it's easy to be disappointed when you come in to something with unattainably high hopes, but I entered the theater completely ambivalent, and still this movie let me down. o__O

I didn't think it was terrible, but I thought people WAY overestimate it. Like, Rapunzel? She's so bland. Oh, yeah, cutesy wootsy and all, but she's just as much of a perfect, flawless character as Aurora or Cinderella, just more modern. She literally has no flaws, she's way more capable than her savvy love interest, and solves every problem she comes across easily.

Her getting over her mother's abuse? Yeah, it was because she had a flashback from when she was a 2-month-old. Not discovering that her mom was a horrible person, not because she grew at all. Because she had a memory. And then afterwards, she completely discards all feelings about the woman who raised her. I don't think Gothel *deserved* pity, but it's far more realistic that she would have some.

Flynn and Rapunzel barely interact, I feel. It's that they do things AROUND each other, not exactly with. I didn't feel like there was much of a connection with them.

Gothel was disappointing. She didn't have much menace and I would have preferred to see some moments of just her thinking and scheming to establish her as a better villain.

Not to mention Flynn is kind of a bad guy. Not just because he steals the tiara--remember, he leaves his cohorts to get hanged. For no reason but to save his skin. At this point they're no better or worse, and even though the Stabbington brothers are portrayed as villains, I don't think they're actually close to being as bad as we think. Even if they wanted to kill Flynn, he kind of deserved it. And they might have tried kidnapping Rapunzel, but it was actually to ransom her back to her own parents...that's not even that bad, really.

And then there's other stuff, like the songs being boring, the design being uninspired, and Rapunzel herself looking really bizarre with a huge head, an extremely tiny body, and grapefruit-sized eyes with extremely puffy lips.

Uh.../endrant?

See, it didn't even leave a big enough impression on me to even muster up a rant like that. I agree that the design was uninspired. Everything looked too clean and the characters looked infantile.

I didn't have much of an opinion besides "well, that sure was a Disney movie, alright", but after hearing about it aaaall the time, I made one.

What's weird is that it didn't strike me as a Disney movie at all. It still doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
The way the relationship ended with Rapunzel and Gothel bothered me as well for every reason you said. I'm sure they wanted her to remain a villain with no sympathy but for Rapunzel's entire life, Gothel was her mom. At the very least, they should have made it seem as if Rapunzel hated her mom long before she found it wasn't her mom but nope...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Rapunzel discards all feelings for the woman who locked her in a tower for YEARS and you have a problem with that. You're kidding right? Gothel mentally and emotionally manipulated Rapunzel for years. Isolating her with fear and destroying her self esteem at every turn so Rapunzel, her immortality, wouldn't leave.

Pause and consider that Gothel knew exactly what she was doing every moment of every day. She terrorized and frightened a child so she wouldn't leave. Let me say that again. She frightened a little girl so much, she was afraid to go outside. The menacing thing about Gothel, is that she exists irl.

Plus at the end Gothel threatens to lock her up again. Then she stabs Flynn on top if it.

You say Rapunzel throws away her feelings for her 'mom'. That's like saying a kidnapping victim, with Stockholm Syndrome, throws away their 'feelings' for their kidnapper.

Oh wait, it is.

Obviously we got very different messages from this movie.

The songs are really bland, but I like the movie a lot. It certainly is gorgeous.
