Wait. 'Tangled' lived up to the hype? Really? Personally, I thought it was terrible, but to each their own.

I thought it was fun. Except for Flynn Rider.

I hated Flynn.

My mom hated Flynn.

My dad hated Flynn.

My boyfriends hated Flynn.

My imaginary dog hated Flynn.

Everyone hates Flynn.

Yea, this.

I was not impressed. The only good song was 'Mother Knows Best' and even that lacks serious epic-ness in the Villain Song department. The story itself wasn't really all that magical either. Meh.

Yeeeeeah, it didn't do much for me either, despite coming into the theater with zero expectations. I mean, it's easy to be disappointed when you come in to something with unattainably high hopes, but I entered the theater completely ambivalent, and still this movie let me down. o__O

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think it was terrible, but I thought people WAY overestimate it. Like, Rapunzel? She's so bland. Oh, yeah, cutesy wootsy and all, but she's just as much of a perfect, flawless character as Aurora or Cinderella, just more modern. She literally has no flaws, she's way more capable than her savvy love interest, and solves every problem she comes across easily.

Her getting over her mother's abuse? Yeah, it was because she had a flashback from when she was a 2-month-old. Not discovering that her mom was a horrible person, not because she grew at all. Because she had a memory. And then afterwards, she completely discards all feelings about the woman who raised her. I don't think Gothel *deserved* pity, but it's far more realistic that she would have some.

Flynn and Rapunzel barely interact, I feel. It's that they do things AROUND each other, not exactly with. I didn't feel like there was much of a connection with them.

Gothel was disappointing. She didn't have much menace and I would have preferred to see some moments of just her thinking and scheming to establish her as a better villain.

Not to mention Flynn is kind of a bad guy. Not just because he steals the tiara--remember, he leaves his cohorts to get hanged. For no reason but to save his skin. At this point they're no better or worse, and even though the Stabbington brothers are portrayed as villains, I don't think they're actually close to being as bad as we think. Even if they wanted to kill Flynn, he kind of deserved it. And they might have tried kidnapping Rapunzel, but it was actually to ransom her back to her own parents...that's not even that bad, really.

And then there's other stuff, like the songs being boring, the design being uninspired, and Rapunzel herself looking really bizarre with a huge head, an extremely tiny body, and grapefruit-sized eyes with extremely puffy lips.

Uh.../endrant?

I thought everyone was completely overreacting about it, but I ended up pleasantly surprised.

I somehow managed to hear next to nothing about Tangled before I watched it, but I absolutely adore that movie. Maximus is the best character OF ALL TIME, ok? Also, bonus points to them for giving Rapunzel ugly crying face.

+10000000000000!!!

OMG, MAXIMUS! I agree so much that there are not enough agreeable words in the dictionary to express how much I agree! :D

Love you, Maximus. I am your biggest fan!

Pretty sure this is a troll. Like, 98.07% sure. Calling out Harry Potter, The Dark Knight and Mean Girls all in one? Yeah, someone is trying to start drama. OP must've been really bored.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, those are all really hyped, beloved movies. OP is not saying they are bad, but that they disappointed because of his/her expectations.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't dislike any of them, I just thought Tangled held up to the hype better. The other movies just had large enough flaws (TDKR was pacing, HP wasn't as faithful to the books as I would have liked, Avatar had a pretty bland storyline, and Mean Girls just fell flat for me) that caused them to fall short of my expectations.

I thought Tangled was cute, but I never understood the love people lavish on the movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's because people wanted a Disney movie like from their childhoods. PatF was kind of all over the place in terms of plot and pacing, and Naveen and Tiana being frogs did NOT help. God I hate that they spent all that time as frogs. It would have been a lot better if Mama Odie fixed them when they arrived, and then they spent their time as humans trying to get back to New Orleans, I don't know, trying to stop Lottie from marrying an imposter.

When Avatar first came out, a few of my friends were praising as being super original with such an amazing message. It really annoyed me because I couldn't take this film seriously. I almost lost it when they said it was more original than Lord of the Rings.

I can't agree with you that it's better than those other movies... except for maybe Batman but that might be because I have a burning hate for that movie. But besides that those other movies were good.

However, I will admit to doing something similar. I avoided watching it because I thought it would be crap. I saw it later and rather liked it a lot. Of course, I might have liked it so much because I had such low expectations for it. I'll admit there are problems but I happen to really like the movie.

I didn't know so many people hated it. I thought it mostly landed on people's "oh, that was nice" scale. Interesting.

Really? That's kinda funny, now that I think about it. For me it was How To Train Your Dragon instead. Weird movie that I beard from posters and on the web, piqued my interest enough to see it, watched it, and loved it even more.

Huh.

I haven't watched this film for that exact reason. And those other films you listed, yep, when I saw them I also thought they were incredibly overrated.

Still skeptical with "Tangled" though.

Tangled was... okay. I'd say it didn't live up to my expectations but tbph by the time it came out I didn't really have any expectations, positive or negative. Pretty much stopped anticipating it when the name got changed. :/
