sure. dory is 1d, undeveloped, kooky and a comic relief in some other character's story.

it's like those ppl who think lottie > tiana in patf.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
it's just occurred to me that dory is like a fish version of a manic pixie dreamgirl.

I think you're right. Doesn't change the fact that I love her forever and ever, but I think you're right.

na

But she isn't just there to "fix" Marlin. Marlin learns from her positive nature and she benefits from Marlin's pressence and friendship (remember that her family left her and Marlin's companionship makes her feel secure again).
Also she doesn't end up being Marlin's love interest.

I wouldn't call her a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl per se.
There is some of that trope in her character, but it isn't everything she is about. I seriously don't like it when people just slap tropes onto female characters that wouldn't be used had the character been male.

Speaking of which, is Gill Nemo's Manic Pixie Dreamboy? Or should we better call him "Manic-depressive Pixie Dreamboy"?

lolwat
How would Gill fit the mpdg trope? He's not there to show Nemo just to let go and have fun and not take everything so serious, he's not bubbly and cute (and he's not bipolar either, have we seen the same movie?)

These tropes are about female characters, so complaining that they're not applied to male characters seems a little... odd at best.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
she's also the one people come out of the movie remembering

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
i have higher standards about what constitutes a good character.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
my standards adjust to the medium. Pixar movie? not the place I go to be impressed.

I'd say a character that isn't memorable is a pretty bad character from a critical perspective. So a character definitely gets extra points for being memorable. Not *tons* but still some.

But Lottie isn't 1D. There's a lot to her character, it's just not hard-hitting stuff.

I love Tiana, but I can see why someone would like Lottie more. Tiana doesn't really get a lot of character time. She gets...reaction time, particularly as a frog. It's mostly her being pissed at Naveen then. I would have loved to have seen a movie that was 80% Tiana, and less Naveen.

And Dory isn't 1D either.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
what's dory's 2nd or 3rd dimension?

she's likable, sure, most cutesy comic reliefs are. but there's not much more to the character other than nice and kooky.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Watch the scene where Marlin leaves.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
i have, several times, it's my nephew's favorite movie. and i knew someone would bring up that scene.

it actually makes me sad that THAT passes as adding dimension to a character.

DOry's character is a large reason I extremely disliked Finding Nemo.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
The whole plot and its characters are the reason I extremely disliked Finding Nemo.

Blech. I don't understand people who think it's one of Pixar's best.

This made me laugh so much. XD

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I have one. That's why I don't enjoy terrible Pixar movies.

I think Wall-E and Toy Story 3 are the only ones I've enjoyed in recent memory.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
and I don't understand people who don't like things I do like.

Impasse.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Tiana has a boring personality and Lottie is charismatic and funny.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, Lottie is annoying as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what you just typed. Clearly internet chatspeak and fandom knowledge has evolved beyond me :C
