But Lottie isn't 1D. There's a lot to her character, it's just not hard-hitting stuff.

I love Tiana, but I can see why someone would like Lottie more. Tiana doesn't really get a lot of character time. She gets...reaction time, particularly as a frog. It's mostly her being pissed at Naveen then. I would have loved to have seen a movie that was 80% Tiana, and less Naveen.

And Dory isn't 1D either.

what's dory's 2nd or 3rd dimension?

she's likable, sure, most cutesy comic reliefs are. but there's not much more to the character other than nice and kooky.

Watch the scene where Marlin leaves.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
i have, several times, it's my nephew's favorite movie. and i knew someone would bring up that scene.

it actually makes me sad that THAT passes as adding dimension to a character.

Man, I misread that as "it's my nephew's favorite scene" and was like what the hell's wrong with your nephew?! |D

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
my nephew's favorite scene is fin, noggin', duuude. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-huh.

Tell me more about how you've found ways to feel superior to other people.

As much as this is also the vibe I got from ayrt...you didn't actually add anything to the conversation or supported your position. Now it's just petty bickering...

Not sure how I didn't--I mentioned to her a particular scene where she was given added depth. She's watched the movie, so she ought to have remembered it.

Not really much else to say when the response goes "Oh, that doesn't count".

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
since it needs to be spelled out - it doesn't count to me because i think depth, even rudimentary children's animation depth, requires intellectual and/or emotional complexity.

dory is about as complex as that dog from up - dug.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Good thing it's just your opinion then. I found Dory interesting, funny, and she had simple but insightful things to say about Marlin and how he was raising Nemo ("Well, you can't never let ANYTHING happen to him, then NOTHING will happen to him...not much fun for little Harpo" and "hmm, I'd say it's half full" and "How do you know something bad isn't gonna happen?" "I don't!" "It's time to let go!"). It was because of Dory and how he spoke to her about Nemo that made Marlin realize how he was treating Nemo, and to trust Nemo when Nemo wanted to free the tuna fish from the nets. And it was her ability to read the address on the mask, and her childlike ability to just TRUST without having to know all the answers or be in total control at all times that got Marlin all the way to Sydney. Marlin would have still been chasing his own fin on the ocean floor if Dory hadn't been there to 'guide' him.

She also showed that she could be tough and uncompromising when she shoved that crab above the ocean in sight of the birds for not telling her and Nemo where Marlin went.

No depth? Maybe if you spent less time looking down on Dory and actually paid attention to her when your nephew was watching, you might have seen the depth you thought was lacking.

this comment made me happy that i bought l'illusionniste as an x-mas present for my nephew. very happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So, what...you think all of those traits are bad and don't want your nephew to pick up on them?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. So you're one of those people who thinks "depth" means "depression".

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet you're a real hit at family reunions.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
And I'd bet real money it'll get regulated to the back of his toy box before your car has left the driveway too.

Translation: "my opinion is correct HDU have a different one if you do you are NOT PAYING PROPER ATTENTION and are INTERROGATING THE TEXT FROM THE WRONG PERSPECTIVE"

FFS it's a cartoon.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I notice you didn't say this to the another anon, who was behaving in the same manner.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a big difference between someone saying a character lacks depth and simply saying they don't care for a character. Yes Dory was comic relief but there was more to her character than just that. You want to see a character that is simply there for sheer comic relief? See the raccoon and hummingbird from Pocahontas or the army men from Mulan. Those are characters that were not developed and only there for laughs and someone the main character could interact with.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, but I was specifically talking about your last comment. In hindsight, though...it wasn't as bad as I'd thought.

ayrt still hasn't said why they think that scene doesn't count, of course...
