My personal headcanon is that dwarf culture frowns on young dwarves growing long full beards until they've accomplished something of note in their life and Kili hasn't yet which is why he's on this quest, because he wants this to be the something of note he accomplishes to be considered fully an adult. (The directors said somewhere that Thorin keeps his own beard short in respect to his father whose beard was burned short by Smaug, but it's also my headcanon that there's nothing preventing a dwarf from keeping his beard short after accomplishing things if he wants to.) Also I'm baffled by the amount of mad that Kili's having minimal dwarven facial hair is causing. Why is this so OMGUPSETTING? He's supposed to be youthful anyway.

It's like there is this bizarre bunch of fans out there that really, really hates seeing anyone look attractive for whatever reason. You see the same reaction any time someone they think should be plain/ugly looks more attractive than they think he/she should be allowed to (see also: Emma Watson as Hermione in the later Harry Potter movies. People fucking BLEW A GASKET over the fact that she got cute.)

And you can bet your ass people would have flipped if they'd re-cast the role with a more plain-looking actress. They would have started screaming about misogyny and casting based solely on looks and all kinds of other stuff.

Haven't seen The Hobbit but I remember that about Emma Watson. Hermione isn't even supposed to be unattractive so I don't get it.

(On the other hand there were Potter fans who were livid that Sirius Black wasn't hot enough.)

I once had a real beauty of an exchange with one of this sort on this very comm. It was a secret someone had submitted about how ridiculous they thought it was that people were bitching about EW being "too pretty" to play Hermione, and I was like "but she's not supposed to be UGLY," and they were like "Yes she IS" and I was like "but Viktor Krum thought she was cute, he asked her to the ball" and they were like "He must have been attracted to her for her brains" and I pointed out that in the last book he specifically describes her as pretty, and they FUCKING ACCUSED ME OF PROMOTING RAPE CULTURE with that statement. I don't even.

I don't think she's supposed to be ugly or pretty, just average. I don't think Emma Watson really resembles Hermione at all, partly because she is stunning and partly because they tone down her hair a lot. But it's not like anyone could have known that when she was cast. She was like 10! It's not that big of a deal anyway.

I was more bothered over the ages of Snape, Sirius, and Lupin. They're only supposed to be around 30 at the start of the first book.

I think she's supposed to be pretty (not a supermodel, mind you, just pretty) but she doesn't put too much effort into her appearance beyond basic hygiene. I think EW could have pulled it off, but the movie makers decided to glamour her up. As GoF demonstrated, she cleaned up, nicely.

Ugh, I hate the casting for Harry's parents' generations - especially James and Lily themselves, in the Mirror of Erised scene and the flashbacks. THEY DIED AT AGE TWENTY-ONE. Why the hell would you cast actors in their forties for them? I honestly think they picked Alan Rickman for Snape without considering the fact that he was far too old to play someone in his early thirties, and cast the rest to match with him. And the end result is, well, the world's oldest twenty-one-year-olds...

And yeah, Watson was only ten when they made PS. As if they could predict she'd grow up to be a stunner. (I think she would have been okay, appearance-wise, if they had let her keep her bushy hair, though. It was just too sleek and well-maintained, and Hermione explicitly says in GoF that she can't be bothered straightening and smoothing it every day.)

The irony of Sirius Black for me was that I imagined him to look a fair bit like Gary Oldman, before I got infected by overly pretty manga-style images I found somewhere (long before the PoA movie was made).

The Hermione thing confuses me. Did these people miss the fact that Emma Watson was cute even back when she was a pre-teen kid? (I mean, cute as in a "Well she's a cute kid!" way.) She was always going to grow up to be pretty.

Not to mention, Fili and Kili are the dwarf equivalent of just being out of their teenage years. They'd be roughly the equivalent of eighteen or nineteen-year-olds - totally fair enough for an eighteen-year-old who's barely an adult to not have or want to have a full beard yet!
