Staying down with my family.

Sister on the couch watching this whilst I browse the web. It's my first actual experience with it outside memes.

And.

It's really not good. Like I've got a high tolerance for shit aimed at kids, hell I've enjoyed more then enough terrible shōnen.

However, this is clearly aimed at small children. What is the attraction, I mean it doesn't even have any brief flashes of meaningful lines, or hell anything of substance, just one note after school special basic messages and characters.

Moderately clever, unquestionably well-executed for what it is, and - for whatever reason - the unrelenting positivity appeals to some weird element of the Mass Unconsciousness of The Nerd Internet.

And of course at this point it's taken on a life of its own & is one of those self-sustaining things that's popular, basically, because it's popular and it's become a Thing.

What episode are you looking at, do you know?

She just finished one about Pony Airforce (one of the main characters is in some training camp affair). But I missed the end.

We're getting to the end of one about the forming of equistria, with the framing narrative of being a play.

(they're in a cave and their arguments are ~causing the snow and ice~)

Ah, that's Wonderbolt Academy and Hearts Warming Eve.

Oh, Wonderbolts Academy and Hearth's Warming Eve. Not the best episodes to begin with, probably really boring if it isn't someone's taste at all.

I haven't watched the Pony Airforce one (it centers around a character I dislike at worst and am indifferent to at best), but the other one was terrible, imo.

The episodes themselves are very hit and miss.*

As for what is the attractive? I like the animation and art style, and there is something irresistible about how earnest and magical the setting is.

It's mind numbing, but if you start with the first two episodes you can get hooked on this seeming promise of epic fantasy-type questing with girl ponies as the MCs, which was an idea too awesome for this world, I guess, and keep watching because you want it so bad and sometimes...sometimes there are little hints of that.

(I'm the anon who posted the kilometric [hyperbole] list of episodes she didn't like in an attempt to explain why she likes the series upthread.)

Holy shit, this. This is so spot on it's scary. Especially about the teasing hints of adventure and stuff in some episodes. Every time I sat down to watch one episode I was all like, "Maybe this one will be cool. Maybe. Oh please," but even at their worst they're not totally unwatchable (To me, at least. God, I'm so easily entertained.).

And ditto on the Two Parter opening of the series. I was promised daring adventures and magical battles against fearsome foes starring cute colorful ponies harnessing the power of their friendship!

That's why the episodes I like are pretty much just the season openers and enders. Nightmare Moon? Yeah! Discord? Fuck yeah! Chrysalis? She'd better come back; you hear me, Hasbro?!

If you have a decent tolerance for 80s cartoons, you might want to give the original/G1 series a try (especially the two feature-length episode/films)."Daring adventures and magical battles against fearsome foes starring cute colorful ponies" is pretty much what upwards of 3/4s of the episodes boil down to, even if they do get cheesy sometimes.

I started watching it only to be able to tell my friend who loves it that I had tried and it sucked buuuut... I got hooked!

For me the appeal is not only the characters but the scenery, everything it's adorable to look at. It's like a condensed dose of cuteness!
I agree that the plot sometimes is kinda silly but well, it's a kid's show after all.

It has Big Lebowski references, that's all I know.

Like, there are Big Lebowski ponies in it.

So as annoying as I find a lot of the fans, I can't hate it for that reason alone.

seriously, you wouldn't know from the fandom that lyra, bon bon, dr whooves, etc. are super minor characters that cameo very briefly at best

And thats why I watch the fandom more than I watch the show. :V

yes tell us again about how you are so ABOVE anyone that likes those stupid baby cartoons.

Problem is, I've seen way better baby cartoons than this one. I still don't get the appeal. The lessons really aren't that great either. Watch Hey Arnold if you want a story about friendship and life lessons. Not to mention it's funny as hell.

They have yet to throw Wind Whistler in there somehow, so I am only half approving of it :P (I'm kidding, though it would be nice to see her)

Oh hey are you me?

I'm chilling with my younger sister and experiencing the joys of My Little Pony (and Alvin and the Chipmunks and Madagascar is her favourite over and over and over).

Cute show, she seems to like it well enough.

But I'm so bored and desperately wishing she'll watch something else for our bonding time. Maybe if it was a movie and it'd be over and done with quickly, instead of episode after episode after oh god more episodes HELP

Personally I think its just okay too. The stuff the fandom churns out can be pretty damn awesome, though, so I've been following the new season episodes just to follow the fanwork.

Its probably the best fandom for music with the possible exception of Homestuck.

Some of the episodes (particularly in season 1) are pretty standout (for instance, I am very fond of Cutie Mark Chronicles and the one where Rarity makes the dresses that I can't be arsed to look up). The season opener of this season was pretty fun but I haven't really been impressed by much else. It hasn't been awful but it hasn't been really great either.

And Pinkie Pie used to be my favorite character but something about her in season 3 seems. . .grating? I can't figure out what it is.

I used to watch it with my best friend every week which made it really fun but I don't anymore and it's not as much fun. Being a part of the fandom is a huge part of loving the show, tbh. There's just some shows where enjoying them with someone else just inherently makes them better idk.

Really? I like Pinkie so far this season. Same goes for Rainbow Dash. Last season? I HATED them both. And I think it comes down to the creators having pandered so damn much to the Bronies last season and not this season. Cause I think Hasbro brought the gavel down and went "NO." It's why Dizzy Doo isn't there anymore in the background and why there really hasn't been much else Brony-esque.

I love it~

I like it because they put a lot more effort into it than most kids' shows, especially in characterization. The characters have strengths and weaknesses and damaged parts that make me care about them. They have problems that people really have, shown compassionately and more or less realistically (Luna's struggle for redemption and acceptance, Twilight's obsession with perfection and control, Pinkie's fear of abandonment). The colors are pretteh, the dialogue is hilarious (e.g. the first minute of 'Over a Barrel"), the songs are epic (Giggle at the Ghosties, Winter Wrap-Up), there's a wonderful element of the absurd that gets left out of a lot of pro-social kids' media (Any scene with Gummy), and more often than not, they're on target with their messages about how to get along, which is pretty rare.

You don't have to like it, but that's why I do.

The music!

"This Day Aria" surprised me. It stole the show from "Love is in Bloom", which was the song they were pushing to be liked the most in that episode. Whoops.
