It's mind numbing, but if you start with the first two episodes you can get hooked on this seeming promise of epic fantasy-type questing with girl ponies as the MCs, which was an idea too awesome for this world, I guess, and keep watching because you want it so bad and sometimes...sometimes there are little hints of that.

(I'm the anon who posted the kilometric [hyperbole] list of episodes she didn't like in an attempt to explain why she likes the series upthread.)

Holy shit, this. This is so spot on it's scary. Especially about the teasing hints of adventure and stuff in some episodes. Every time I sat down to watch one episode I was all like, "Maybe this one will be cool. Maybe. Oh please," but even at their worst they're not totally unwatchable (To me, at least. God, I'm so easily entertained.).

And ditto on the Two Parter opening of the series. I was promised daring adventures and magical battles against fearsome foes starring cute colorful ponies harnessing the power of their friendship!

That's why the episodes I like are pretty much just the season openers and enders. Nightmare Moon? Yeah! Discord? Fuck yeah! Chrysalis? She'd better come back; you hear me, Hasbro?!

If you have a decent tolerance for 80s cartoons, you might want to give the original/G1 series a try (especially the two feature-length episode/films)."Daring adventures and magical battles against fearsome foes starring cute colorful ponies" is pretty much what upwards of 3/4s of the episodes boil down to, even if they do get cheesy sometimes.

I actually have vague memories of watching this series as a child. (G3 too, I think.)

I've seen images and video clips of it floating around, and I was all like, "hey, I know this!"

It's worth a rewatch, I guess!

Oh, and I just remembered- make sure you're looking for the first G1 cartoon (My Little Pony and Friends) and not the second (My Little Pony Tales).

I never watched much of the latter as a kid, but from what I remember it was way more slice-of-life oriented and not what it sounds like you're looking for.
