FFS! Why am I in trouble?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Both of the other people in the office went home hours early today, without permission. They're the same rank as me, and I couldn't insist they stayed, but I did ask them both if they were sure they were finished for the year (we re-open in Jan).

After they'd gone I found that one of them had neglected to send a huge shipment that should have been dispatched yesterday, and I couldn't handle it on my own. Literally, I couldn't lift it. Packaging's a two-person job and I'm not trained for it anyway, I do sales.

I could have pretended not to know, it wasn't my job to go looking in that folder, and I was only in there because a customer had called to check the details of their order and I happened to notice that one of the labels was still "processing" colour rather than "dispatched", but, no, I called my colleagues, who refused to come back/"wouldn't be there in time", so I called the boss who lives around the corner and works from home on a Friday.

He stomped around the corner, shouted and swore at me, and when I pointed out that I have no control over the others at my level he replied that person A is leaving in a few weeks, so even though she is the most experienced person in the office there's no point in being angry at her, and person B is well known for being useless so there's no point being angry at him either. Then he made a note in my personnel file right in front of me. Apparently I'm fair game for anger.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the boss of a company thinks an employee is "completely bloody useless" then they should do something about it. They shouldn't take it out on other employees just because those employees are competant and so should be expected to do their own job and take up the slack of the other person. I appreciate that people have differing abilities, but in that case jobs should be tailored to individuals, it does no one any good to spend man hours doing something then more man hours having another person do it all again, which it what often happens with B.

Oh well, I have 1 1/2 weeks off. I intend to enjoy them.

Man, that really sucks. I'm sorry your coworkers and boss are jerks.

Wow... that's incredibly shitty. From the sounds of it, you tried to do the right/responsible thing, and your boss' reasoning for making a note in your file and not the other's is completely unfair. If your one co-worker is that useless, it would make sense to reprimand him or, you know, get rid of him so he can hire someone who will actually do the job.

It's completely irrational & it's just the way that business works. Next time, just don't tell anyone, as long as you can find a way to ensure that it won't come back on you.

I really nearly said nothing today, I felt it swould go badly. If it had been just any Friday I'd probably have pretended I didn't see it, someone would catch it Monday, or the customer would have complained. I just felt too guilty thinking it would be nearly a fortnight before they got what they ordered.

Thanks nonny.

Um, I'd take that up with someone 'higher up' the line than your boss, if that's possible. They've written you off as doing something wrong, whilst letting those who actually did do it off the hook. Given the boss knows one employee is useless and does nothing about it means your boss isn't doing their job right.

IMO, I think you should file a complaint if possible.

This. Go up the chain of command, OP. Write down exactly what happened, then keep a record of any conversations you have about the incident with your boss, his boss, etc. I know from experience how nerve-wracking it can be to have to go above your boss's head, but if you don't fight this it can come back to bite you even harder down the line.

Yep, I was just going to say this. The shipment isn't even YOUR job, and you did at least try to let the others know AND your boss. Which is better than doing absolutely nothing.

It's kind of crappy to take it out on you for at least trying to fix something that wasnt your fault to begin with. Maybe he was so angry it happened and he had no one else to take it out on, but putting it on your file is BS. I hope you have someone higher up to complain to.

You a small business?

Because man, fuck small businesses.

If you're working anywhere of substance, go to HR.

Sounds to me like the boss of the company is "completely bloody useless." It would be SO tempting to point that out.

If your boss has a supervisor that you can take this to, or if your company has a HR department, bring this issue up with them. It's absolutely wrong for you to be penalized (with a note in your personnel file), let alone verbally abused, for something that was your coworkers' fault and you were trying to make right.

If possible, I'd suggest acting on this sooner rather than later.

This (also, other people suggested it too). As long as your boss's boss isn't like his BFF, this is something they should hear coming from you right away and should -hopefully- do something about it.

This (your situation, OP) is like the complete opposite companies should work, dammit.

Maybe your boss was so angry and tired that he had to take it out on someone. Sorry you had to be it. Hopefully your boss will lay off a little when you return. The break should give everyone a chance to cool their heels.
