A Little Princess. Really like the American version, it's a sweet film with some very touching moments (melodrama, yes, but that's in the source material). For all that it was truer to the source material, the classism of the BBC version really irked me. Sometimes I prefer it when the narrative's sensibilities are updated.

There are two American versions. The 90's version and the Shirley Temple version that predates the BBC version. (Personally, I like the Shirley Temple version.)

ayrt - oh, dear lord, I forgot about the Shirley Temple version, but something about her incessant cheeriness grates upon my nerves. No, I meant the 1990s version. But I'm glad Shirley gets some love, too!

I love the 90s version with all the passion of my sometimes-still-8-year-old heart.

Yes! For me, especially the lines: "I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren't pretty, or smart, or young. They're still princesses. All of us. Didn't your father ever tell you that?"

No, I didn't memorize that, I googled it to get it right - but I love that scene so much. That, and the scene where she's dancing in the snow.

I would need to see the BBC version to really know. The American 1990 version kinda bugged me, in that it was a little hammy/over the top with Miss Minchin. It was very pretty, though.

The Shirley Temple one is cute but they buggered the ending.
