Remakes that work?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Remakes get a lot of (often well-deserved) shit, but I know that there are some that I enjoy and sometimes even prefer to the original. Just curious, but what remakes work for you, f!s?

Some like it Hot. So good that people don't even realize that it is a remake of a French film.

With you on this. I have a lingering affection for Fanfare d'amour, but it is nothing compared to Some Like It Hot (I tried abbreviating that, but "SLIT" sounded terrible when written whilst watching a murder mystery featuring gruesome dismemberment)

War of the Worlds (the one with Cruise). I just love everything about it. Even the two kids. Especially the two kids.

The original bores me. Used to scare me as a kid, but now it's just really not interesting at all.

I love half of that film. I think it starts to go off track when they go into the basement with Tim Robbins, and then it goes completely off the track when they come out of the basement and Tom Cruise goes all action hero. But I agree, it had a really promising start, and it really caught the sense of mad panic that came over everyone to just get away.

The Mummy 1999 > The Mummy 1932. No offense to Boris Karloff fans.

UNPOPULAR OPINION

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-12-22 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The 2011 remake of Fright Night. To me it was everything a vampire movie should be; the vampires were the ultimate predator and undeniably terrifying. It was the perfect antidote to some of the Twilight-fever going on.

Also David Tennant wearing leather pants, pulling on his crotch, and generally being a drunken horndog, all while using his Doctor Who accent.

The Parent Trap. Lindsey Lohan really did have talent back then, and I think the cast on the whole is better in the remake.

A Little Princess. Really like the American version, it's a sweet film with some very touching moments (melodrama, yes, but that's in the source material). For all that it was truer to the source material, the classism of the BBC version really irked me. Sometimes I prefer it when the narrative's sensibilities are updated.

The Karate Kid (Kung Fu Kid). I grew up watching the first and was not happy when they announced a remake was in the works, but when I finally saw it I loved it and thought it was just so much better than the original in so many ways.

The 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon. It's generally remembered as *the* Maltese Falcon, but it was actually the third adaptation.

Also, His Girl Friday. That was originally The Front Page, then they genderswapped Hildy and called it a new movie.

I like, maybe even prefer, the US version of The Ring over the Japanese original. The female character is given more to do, and the fact that she's an investigative reporter ends up being more relevant in that she has to investigate Samara's background instead of that background just being given to the main characters though supernatural means.

The "newest" Poirot and Miss Marple series. I've seen some of the older adaptations of Agatha Christie's stories, and they just didn't do it for me. (David Suchet is THE Poirot, barring arcane magic actually bringing the character from the book to life.)

I-I've even liked some of the live action adaptations better than the original stories...

I liked the remake of 3:10 to Yuma a lot better than the original. Granted, it had Russell Crowe and Christian Bale as the leads. That helped a lot. |D

I loved the remake of The girl with the dragon tattoo and hated the Swedish one (the second and third one I kinda liked, tho)

I really wanted to love the Swedish and hate the remake on principle. I find really stupid that a movie gets a remake a couple years after release because we need a "Hollywood" one.
But the remake is way better, so I had to eat my words.

The US version of The Vanishing. I liked the way the remake set things up before the abduction and made the movie more of a psychological thriller. And the acting was just incredible! I've never looked at Jeff Bridges the same.

I like both the German Mostly Martha and the American No Reservations for different reasons, but I think I find the characters in the American remake more accessible and I tend to enjoy that more in a movie. I'm blanking on any other remakes, but I swear I had some...

Ocean's Eleven and Thomas Crown Affair.

the latest Ocean's Eleven had a better story with better flow (idk less late drunk night for the rat pack), but chistgoddamn the McQueen Crown Affair was dark and violent.

The 1973 version of The Three Musketeers combined with the later film The Four Musketeers (which was actually the second half that came out like a year or two later). It had Oliver Reed, Michael York, Richard Chamberlain, Faye Dunaway, Charlton Heston, Raquel Welch, Christopher Lee, and Roy Kinnear in it. It is the only adaptation I've ever seen that kept the humorous elements from Dumas' works in it. D'Artagnan was perfectly portrayed as the Gascon who wants to join the Musketeers instead of the more popular and inaccurate portrayals where he is an equal or even worse, is the leader of the group. By the time The Four Musketeers starts, he is finally a part of the group (hence the name change for the film) and the others treat him equally but he is still very much their junior within the overall Musketeers. I wish Hollywood would stop trying to remake The Three Musketeers because it was already done perfectly almost 40 years ago.

Never saw the old Judge Dredd movie (don't plan to either. stalone isn't exactly a favorite actor of mine and i only like a few of his movies) but the new one? LOVED IT.

The Mummy *_*

True Grit

The Parent Trap

It's not a remake, but I know some hardcore original fans may see it that way and hate it, but I'll add Star Trek to that list (even though i adore the original show).

The new Karate Kid

101 Dalmations. I like them both ok?

I don't care what ANYONE says, I love the '98 Godzilla. Mainly for the french guy and Godzilla himself. It came out when I was still heavily into giant lizards. :P

Ok, just to preface this one, I prefer the original, but, I did end up liking the latest remake of Miracle on 34th Street. I can sit through it and enjoy it. But if I had the choice given to me, I'd rather watch the original. The '73 version can go die in a fire though.
