The 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon. It's generally remembered as *the* Maltese Falcon, but it was actually the third adaptation.

Also, His Girl Friday. That was originally The Front Page, then they genderswapped Hildy and called it a new movie.

It's generally remembered as *the* Maltese Falcon, but it was actually the third adaptation.

This is also the case with the Judy Garland version of Wizard of Oz; there were other versions done in the 1910's, '20's, and early '30's, so it's a remake that became the definitive version.

Now that you've said that, I recall seeing both the original A Star is Born, and the superior remake with Judy Garland (followed by an inferior remake with Barbra Streisand, and I think they're remaking it again with Beyonce?!). Anyway, Judy Garland kicks ass is all I wanted to say.
