From the wiki:

"Dwarves were a short, stocky race, little taller than hobbits but much broader and heavier. They grew thick, luxuriant beards in which they took great pride, and often forked or braided them and tucked them into their belts."

So yeah.

Are you trying to make a point that they are or arent' supposed to be attractive? Because I see nothing in that quote that says they can't?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
They wouldn't like Aidan Turner.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
He IS short and stocky in the movie as a dwarf. Not in real life, no, but that doesn't matter.

The only thing not dwarf-like about him, according to that description, is his lack of beard. And honestly, why does every single dwarf need to look the same? Not all humans or even elves have the same body type and sense of style even if there is an overall preference among the race. One out of 13 dwarves breaking the norm is hardly something that should cause concern.

And Kili is also supposed to be young and a little rebellious anyway. He probably shaves his beard just because he can.

I think you need to look up the definition of stocky.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
No I don't. He does look stocky, at least with all of those clothes and armor on.

If we ever see him naked, and we won't, then maybe there will be room to argue.

That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with attractiveness, though. If you don't find short, stocky and bearded sexy then it they might not do anything for you, but for some people that description doesn't mean ugly.

Less to do with Aidan Turner being attractive and more to do with him looking nothing like a Tolkien dwarf.

We'll just have to disagree then. He fit in just fine with the rest of the cast imo, and at least for me his appearance wasn't distracting in the least.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed - in solo shots before I saw the film I was a little concerned of him looking a bit like Aragorn but I changed my mind completely when I saw the film. He fits in as one of the dwarves, as a young one who will eventually grow a longer beard but for now keeps it short. He looks like a Dwarf to me completely and fits in perfectly.

I think some people are stuck on all Dwarfs looking like Gimli, when as someone above said they're not all going to look the same - that'd be ridiculous.

Yea, I don't see why all dwarves should look the same. Just because they have certain physical things in common doesn't mean every dwarf ever needs to look similar. The descriptions of the dwarves in The Hobbit are almost nonexistent, so there's no point in being boring and making them all look alike; I like that they all have their own distinct look. It makes them easier to tell apart and connect to. As for the beard thing...I just don't think it's that big a deal. He still has facial hair and even if he doesn't have a beard now, that doesn't mean he won't one day. He's a young dwarf and it doesn't seem out of the question that he just doesn't want one yet.

Oh man, I love Gimli; he's one of my favorite LOTR characters. That said, nope; that wouldn't be fun at all.
