I haven't read the books so I don't quite understand why Dwarves can't be sexy. Is that a canon thing? That they'll all supposed to be gross and unattractive?

I just put Kili being goodlooking in the movie down to him being (I think) the youngest and that he'll probably round out and get all wrinkly as he's older.

And HELLO, was Thorin not sexy as fuck? I don't see anyone complaining about how hot he was. Or maybe it's just cuz he's played by an actor that's not so well-known for being a pretty boy?

I have seen people complaining about Thorin being ruggedly good looking so he doesn't escape criticism either. Personally I found Richard Armitage quite hot ever since I saw North and South years ago and it seems that a lot of people only watched Robin Hood because of him. But maybe he gets more of a pass compared to Kili because at least Thorin has a full on beard. IDK.

I found Thorin to be by FAR sexier than Kili. There was a lot of hot dwarfishness in that movie.

Not much is mentioned on how dwarves look like, that is, whether they are ugly or not aside that the women have beards. Tolkien was very simple in his descriptions when it came to the races of Middle Earth. (Even worse when it came to battles.) For example, most of what we know of how Bilbo looked like actually came from his drawings. Forget about the dwarves. Except for Bombur who always mentioned as being big. Mind you, Tolkien never said whether he was handsome or not. Just rotund.

That...sounds kind of like awful writing.

If he didn't describe basic appearances or battles, what the hell did he describe?

/never read Tolkien

Lots and lots of nature.

Lots and lots and lots of it.

So very, very much of it.

I was thinking about trying to read The Hobbit again, since so many of my friends are into Tolkien and this new movie, but...you're reminding me just why I couldn't. *sigh*

Places. Nature. Also, things happen that aren't battles. And he does describe some basic appearances, it just that sometimes (depending on the book and character) it's very brief.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding me? Today, if anyone describes anything, s/he is tagged as being an awful writer. One is not supposed to use descriptive language; it's weak! It "tells" rather than "shows!" It wastes the reader's time!

Welcome to the wonderful world of writing, man, where using an adjective is akin to taking the lord's name in vain.

He wrote like a teacher because he was a professor, which meant, his language was stripped down to the facts. As in, such and such battle took place here with such and such armies and such and such people died.

Like other people has said, he does take time to describe nature, which he so loved.

IIRC, it's not even a foregone conclusion that elves have pointy ears. Tolkien didn't say they did and some artists have depicted them with round ears like humans.

Then there's the question of Legolas' hair color...

And there's the whole "Do Balrogs have wings?" argument...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought somewhere there is one fleeting reference to "Leaf-shaped" ears.

And I think Legolas is simply described as "fair"? He's more red-headed in my headcanon, but whether I picked that up from the book or not I don't remember.

But the Balrog definitely has wings. That's my favorite chapter of the whole thing and I know it by heart. The wings "spread from wall to wall."

Not much is mentioned on how dwarves look like, that is, whether they are ugly or not aside that the women have beards.

Did he ever actually say the women had beards? I remember a lot of complaining about the joke in the movie where Aragorn (IIRC) mimes a beard when Gimli's talking about female dwarves, because, the complainers said, Tolkien never said that, and that's just fan speculation.

I read his books a long time ago but I never remember him saying/writing that either. However, I do remember the wank that part of the movie created. Mostly because some people were arguing that there were no dwarf women. But I could have sworn there were dwarf women mentioned extremely briefly. But beards? I don't think it was ever mention but it would be good to check with a few people here who know more.

Dis Daughter of Thrain II is mentioned in the Appendix of LOTR, so yeah. Dwarf women existed. They're supposedly only about a third of the population. To quote Tolkien's Appendix directly:

They are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like the dwarf men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart.

That's probably where the idea that they have beards came from since the male dwarves presented in Tolkien's stories are all bearded.

The battles always seemed to hold together well, for me. He didn't go into much detail, but since he'd fought on the Somme, he probably didn't want to; and many of his readers would very likely have been able to fill in those details for themselves. If they'd wanted to.

Thorin was so hot. I can't.

My Richard Armitage situation is getting out of control.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
From the wiki:

"Dwarves were a short, stocky race, little taller than hobbits but much broader and heavier. They grew thick, luxuriant beards in which they took great pride, and often forked or braided them and tucked them into their belts."

So yeah.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Are you trying to make a point that they are or arent' supposed to be attractive? Because I see nothing in that quote that says they can't?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)

That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with attractiveness, though. If you don't find short, stocky and bearded sexy then it they might not do anything for you, but for some people that description doesn't mean ugly.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Less to do with Aidan Turner being attractive and more to do with him looking nothing like a Tolkien dwarf.

I guess people are more okay with Thorin (and Fili) being hot because they still looked like dwarves, probably because they had proper beards. Kili looks like he's human, just shorter.

Thorin Oakensheild melts my loins into butter.

As an asside, I liked him better in the current-time scenes with the long straight hair and the streaks of grey. The shorter curly, totally black hair of the flashbacks did nothing for me.

What. Richard Armitage not known for being pretty? What. Lol. WHAT.
