That...sounds kind of like awful writing.

If he didn't describe basic appearances or battles, what the hell did he describe?

/never read Tolkien

Lots and lots of nature.

Lots and lots and lots of it.

So very, very much of it.

I was thinking about trying to read The Hobbit again, since so many of my friends are into Tolkien and this new movie, but...you're reminding me just why I couldn't. *sigh*

The Hobbit, I didn't have much trouble with.

But good goddess, the Lord of the Rings...that just killed me. By the time the first Ringwraith came along I was shouting 'get on with the damned story!' at the book, and just gave up.

Yeah, this is why I got through 3/4ths of Fellowship, over the three week period that I had the book checked out and....ugh. D: Great story and I was looking forward to Elrond the entire time, but once I got there and such....I had to stop.

Tolkien was payed by the word, and didnt use an editor.

Tolkien was an environmentalist before they were cool.

Places. Nature. Also, things happen that aren't battles. And he does describe some basic appearances, it just that sometimes (depending on the book and character) it's very brief.

Are you kidding me? Today, if anyone describes anything, s/he is tagged as being an awful writer. One is not supposed to use descriptive language; it's weak! It "tells" rather than "shows!" It wastes the reader's time!

Welcome to the wonderful world of writing, man, where using an adjective is akin to taking the lord's name in vain.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
What? Description is showing. That's the only way to show in prose.

Telling is when the reader gets information second-hand instead of 'seeing' it (ie. having it described to them) directly. As is, the author writing that X the Magnificent is the greatest knitter in the land of Y! And then never actually describing X knitting or describing X's magnificent knit creations.

People are encouraged not to make their descriptions so flowery the reader can't make it through to the end of the paragraph without forgetting what is being described.

He wrote like a teacher because he was a professor, which meant, his language was stripped down to the facts. As in, such and such battle took place here with such and such armies and such and such people died.

Like other people has said, he does take time to describe nature, which he so loved.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Also, I'm pretty sure he wrote the whole series (or at least the LoTR part) just to showcase his nifty Elven language... though I could be wrong.
