Mostly unrelated tangent

Lori's complaints in flashback about how she's thinking that Rick's too into his work and they're probably going to split up has always made me wonder if she was already carrying on with Shane before Rick's accident. If they were, it definitely casts a more sympathetic light on Shane's insistence that what they had was more than a stress-fueled temporary escape. He was REALLY messed up by Lori's insistence that was all they'd had.

It makes his fits of outright anger make more sense when Rick's come back from the dead and is going around reclaiming his wife and kid, plus there's the fact that *most of* the rest of the group was more responsive to his leadership style than Shane's. Shane drew a gun on Rick before they ever left the Atlanta camp. He and Dale were the only ones who knew it, though.

As time goes on, the group looks to Rick more and more, and as that happens, Shane gets more and more wild-eyed and unpredictable. He does everything in his power to "prove" that he's the better leader. IMO, playing nursemaid to Rick was just another way it manifested. He talked about leaving them and going off on his own or with Andrea, but you notice he never did.

you notice he never did.

Because he died. (Kidding.)

Seriously, though. I need to go back and watch season 1 and 2 again. It should be interesting to rewatch knowing what happens.

I never got that impression. Especially the way she reacted when Rick came back and rejoined the camp group, and she found out he was alive. The thing she focused on was, "You told me he was dead," which implied strongly to me that (whatever marital problems she and Rick were having before the apocalypse) she would never have knowingly cheated on her still-living husband. I always had the sense that a large part of Lori's guilt throughout seasons 1 and 2 came from the discovery that she'd been cheating rather than being a widow.
