Brilliant. The only reason I read the secret (meandering bullshit that it was) was because of the fandom.

Dude, I ship Shane/Rick and I think this is a whole lot of bullshit and I am so fucking sick of people blaming Lori for Shane's dickishness and death.

AND HOW YOU GONNA BLAME CARL FOR ANYTHING, HE'S JUST A KID.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Lori might not be wholly responsible for causing Shane's mental breakdown, but she wasn't helping by constantly trying to make Shane feel included to his face, only to turn around and tell Rick Shane was a danger to the whole group, especially to her. She was two-faced to the max and I do not feel bad at ALL that she died. I just wish it could've been by zombies.

Oh my god no.

I ship Rick/Shane so hard and Shane is my favorite character in the series but in no way at all can you blame anything on Carl.

Lori is probably partially to blame, sure, but so is Rick, AND MOST OF ALL SHANE. The way Lori treated Shane might have made him upset but dude, nothing she did made Shane CHOOSE to try and murder his best friend. That was all Shane. He is 100% responsible for his own actions.

If you can't accept Shane for who he was, then you don't really love Shane. You love the woobified version of Shane that exists in your head.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, this has nothing to do with the secret, which I'm going to be honest and say I didn't even read all the way through. I've never seen an episode of the show, haven't read the comics, and am not in the fandom.

But the first time I saw that pic of Shane wiping Rick's face - I just kept looking at that. And I don't even know the story behind it, but it's obviously a very emotional moment, and it just really hit all my h/c shipping buttons in a huge way. I don't even know. After I found out a little more about the show it became obvious it wasn't going to be something I was interested in, but still. It's just a great picture.

/unrelated rambling.

I only started watching this show this season, and then I went back and watched season 2 (not season 1, so I don't know all the backstory on the characters). When I got to the episode where that picture takes place, and Shane is so solicitous of Rick's well-being, I felt....something...too. Shane was always this big tough guy, and he's played by an actor who looks like he should be a former prizefighter with that busted nose, and to see him act so nurturing and mother-hen-like to Rick in that moment was...wow.

Seriously? Wow. I guess we didn't watch the same show at all. I can't stand any of those characters and I still think you're full of crap.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in any of the fandoms that tend to have a big problem with the "It's totally canon you guise!!1!" phenomenon (Supernatural, Teen Wolf, and Merlin come to mind), so I've never experienced this level of full-on batshittery firsthand.

Now that I have, all I can say is wo-o-o-o-o-o-ow. That's special.

(Can't decide if woobie!Shane/Lori-hate is better or worse than woobie!Governor/Michonne-hate.)

(Can't decide if woobie!Shane/Lori-hate is better or worse than woobie!Governor/Michonne-hate.)

This. Sometime, I think the woobie!Governor stuff is worse, but. I don't know. I really don't know.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Waiting patiently for him to...? What?

Wasn't it not until that point that they found out people could come back without being bitten? Rick thought it was over. He wasn't waiting for Shane to go zombie.

Well, Jenner told Rick at the CDC that everyone was infected but Rick didn't believe him until Shane came back.

No.

Mostly unrelated tangent

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Lori's complaints in flashback about how she's thinking that Rick's too into his work and they're probably going to split up has always made me wonder if she was already carrying on with Shane before Rick's accident. If they were, it definitely casts a more sympathetic light on Shane's insistence that what they had was more than a stress-fueled temporary escape. He was REALLY messed up by Lori's insistence that was all they'd had.

It makes his fits of outright anger make more sense when Rick's come back from the dead and is going around reclaiming his wife and kid, plus there's the fact that *most of* the rest of the group was more responsive to his leadership style than Shane's. Shane drew a gun on Rick before they ever left the Atlanta camp. He and Dale were the only ones who knew it, though.

As time goes on, the group looks to Rick more and more, and as that happens, Shane gets more and more wild-eyed and unpredictable. He does everything in his power to "prove" that he's the better leader. IMO, playing nursemaid to Rick was just another way it manifested. He talked about leaving them and going off on his own or with Andrea, but you notice he never did.

you notice he never did.

Because he died. (Kidding.)

Seriously, though. I need to go back and watch season 1 and 2 again. It should be interesting to rewatch knowing what happens.

"off" as this secret may be, I didn't know TWD fandom was full of so many assholes. Your interpretation may not be my interpretation, but I don't see the point in calling it "bullshit" but then again, I'm new to the fandom and haven't read the comics. Also new to FS, is everyone generally an asshole until given a REALLY good reason not to be?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh wow!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
As an annoying comic fan constantly making comparisons, I feel like it really was really important that Carl was the one to kill zombie!Shane. (Of course, in the comics, it was Carl that killed human!Shane and Rick that killed zombie!Shane, and in the show it was reversed, but still.) Carl had already started his forceful growing, but because it was Shane that he put down, it added that edge of hardness that Carl needed to develop. Doesn't matter if it was Shane, or later his mom, he did what needed to be done.

Maybe you do have a point though about Rick's closure, because in the comics he ends up returning to where they'd buried Shane after finding out that everyone is infected (he can't leave Shane as a zombie). I tried to find the passage for you, but can't, dammit.
