As an annoying comic fan constantly making comparisons, I feel like it really was really important that Carl was the one to kill zombie!Shane. (Of course, in the comics, it was Carl that killed human!Shane and Rick that killed zombie!Shane, and in the show it was reversed, but still.) Carl had already started his forceful growing, but because it was Shane that he put down, it added that edge of hardness that Carl needed to develop. Doesn't matter if it was Shane, or later his mom, he did what needed to be done.

Maybe you do have a point though about Rick's closure, because in the comics he ends up returning to where they'd buried Shane after finding out that everyone is infected (he can't leave Shane as a zombie). I tried to find the passage for you, but can't, dammit.

Found it! Jeez, Kirkman puts in a lot of emphasis. And yes, I had to add in Shane's zombie noises.


Rick: (waiting for zombie!Shane to climb out of grave) C'mon, Shane -- you can do it. I didn't leave that much dirt on top of you. Stand up.
Shane: Humngh.
Rick: There you are. So I guess it's not an isolated thing -- coming back without being bitten. I thought it might be. Julie turned pretty quick, but it took us hours to get you into the ground. So many damn questions. When I realized you might be at the bottom of that hole, alive -- or whatever -- I couldn't stop thinking about it. I couldn't sleep -- knowing you were down there. Would you have left me? You were a good man, Shane. I don't know why you did what you did... but you were a good man.
Shane: Huhhhh.
Rick: Had things turned out differently, if you had killed me... I wonder if you would have just assumed being buried "alive" wouldn't effect me. Could you have lived with yourself? Not me. I had to set things right.
(BLAM!)
Rick: I need to be getting back. There's no telling what's going on there while I'm gone. I ain't gonna bury you again, you son of a bitch.
