Least favorite "must see" Christmas movie

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
So, out of all the Christmas movies that constantly play on TV this time of year and are touted as classics or modern classics or are just popular, which ones do you dislike the most?

I really can't stand "Elf", tbh.

Not really a fan of Elf, either. It's a shame, since I like Will Ferrell, but that movie does nothing for me.

I hate How The Grinch Stole Christmas (both the cartoon and that live action abomination). It gave me nightmares as a child. All of the Seuss works did, tbh (though I think the man himself was a pretty interesting dude)

I don't get the appeal of It's a Wonderful Life.

Me neither. I don't really see the ending as all that happy, since the money is still missing, George still has to deal with his useless uncle and Potter, and in general forget his dreams and continue to be self-sacrificing. We are celebrating that he gave up.

LOL. You really did miss the point. The point isn't that his problems are solved, it's that he doesn't feel like his problems are the end of the world anymore because his life was put in perspective and despite all the problems he has, he loves his life and his friends and his town and his wife and his kids and in the balance, his problems are not enough to bring him down.

DA. Yup! This is why it's such a feel-good movie for me - that he can be in such despair, and then he steps out of his life for a moment and can see that, in the big scheme of things, he has so much more.

Although, I have to admit, I do always laugh at the alternate reality where, the film is really super-serious that, 'oh noez - she's a spinster!' (-:

AYRT. His life was put in perspective, because Clarence showed him a ridiculously depressing alternative, where everything went straight to hell. Anything would seem better in comparison. If instead he'd seen a world where he left the town like his brother and fulfilled his dreams, he might say "screw it" and kill himself. Clarence was just manipulating him in order to get his wings :P

And like someone said below, even his wife is a spinster, oh the horror and inhumanity. I admit that I chuckled at that point.

I kind of like it because it's so dark - like "Mr Smith Goes To Washington", it's this crushingly depressing, realistic, almost overly grim movie about American life and how it can lead to complete emotional devastation and how the rich and powerful always win, with completely realistic, depressing endings, and then it has this little magical Deus Ex Machina tacked on and so somehow it's considered a happy movie.

I don't like "Wonderful Life" as much as "Mr Smith" but I still kind of love it just because it is so dark. I don't think this is why most people like it though, and I couldn't explain why they do.

Re: Least favorite "must see" Christmas movie

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's a great movie as a MOVIE but it really doesn't need to be a must-see Christmas movie. It wasn't meant to be about Christmas and it's really not about Christmas, so...

Re: Least favorite "must see" Christmas movie

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't either. I think it's because the parts that get referenced or re-enacted all the time - the part where the angel shows him how things would be if he never existed and the scene at the very end where the kid mentions an angel getting its wings - don't make up all that much of the movie. Whenever I catch it on TV, it's always the long, long recounting of his entire life story and while I get that we need to know this stuff for any of it to make sense, I find it extremely boring.

THIS. I think I even made a secret about it.

It's not even so much a least favourite as instinctive horror and a fuckload of "GET THE CONCEPT OF THIS MOVIE AWAY FROM ME"

I keep being surprised by my hatred at it, very unexpected.

A Christmas Story. I used to like it, now it just gets on my nerves. The only thing I like is the leg lamp.

The only Christmas movies I like are 'The Muppet Chistmas Carol' and 'Santa's Slay.' Also, 'Gremlins.'

Never liked 'A Christmas Story.' Loath 'Elf.' Meh on 'It's a Wondeful Life.' Used to like 'Love Actually' more than I do now. I love Bill Nighy's part and wish that was it's own movie.

I've never considered the Harry Potter films Christmas movies.

I once had a Christmas movie marathon with my friends and we watched Gremlins and Lethal Weapon! Doesn't Die Hard take place around Christmas, too?

Yeah, Die Hard does too.

The Harry Potter films aren't, but some of the films have really good Christmas-y scenes so people tend to like watching them. I really only like the first movie when it comes to HP Christmas related stuff. The third one isn't too bad either, aside from the whole, "Harry finds out that his parents' best friend basically is the reason why Harry doesn't have parents anymore," part.

Pfff almost ALL of them, I really hate holiday movies.

The only ones I really like and try to watch every year are Miracle on 34th Street (the original and NOT the colorized version) and Jingle all the Way.

It's not any particular version, but I think we need a moratorium on retreads of A Christmas Carol. I mean on the one hand I like that they're basically fanfiction AUs, but on the other...you're not bringing anything new to the story anymore, and as a story it's not that great on its own.

Does not apply to A Divas Christmas Carol. That's my favorite.

I don't much like "Elf" either. I also don't like most adaptations of "A Christmas Carol" -- I like the book, but none of the movies that I've seen so far. And I hate all the "heartwarming" Hallmark Christmas movies. Or all those romantic comedies that get away with being really dumb and uninspired and relying on mentioning sex every five seconds by being set at Christmas. And I don't like "The Santa Clause 2". Actually, I don't really like "The Santa Clause" all that much either.

A Christmas Story, although that's less as a result of the movie itself and more because when I was little my sister would watch it over and over and over again throughout the entire month of December.

I can't stand it either! My friends' obsession grates on me.

Currently, the Madagascar Christmas special. The kid has played it 8 times today alone and I'm developing a hate for it. If I don't let her watch it, she hangs around doing a LOUD rendition of the most annoying parts.

Everyone seems to like 'love actually' but I honestly don't know if it cheers me up or depresses me. I guess I like some of the stories, but for the most part it makes me feel kind of lonely and it's cheesy in a fake kind of way. I dunno, some of the stories are better than others I guess.

Elf is horrible. Jingle All the Way is also bad, and, even though I've been told to see it....I can't bring myself to watch It's a Wonderful Life. Maybe because I've been told to watch it so many times, I'm resisting.
