I don't get the appeal of It's a Wonderful Life.

Me neither. I don't really see the ending as all that happy, since the money is still missing, George still has to deal with his useless uncle and Potter, and in general forget his dreams and continue to be self-sacrificing. We are celebrating that he gave up.

LOL. You really did miss the point. The point isn't that his problems are solved, it's that he doesn't feel like his problems are the end of the world anymore because his life was put in perspective and despite all the problems he has, he loves his life and his friends and his town and his wife and his kids and in the balance, his problems are not enough to bring him down.

DA. Yup! This is why it's such a feel-good movie for me - that he can be in such despair, and then he steps out of his life for a moment and can see that, in the big scheme of things, he has so much more.

Although, I have to admit, I do always laugh at the alternate reality where, the film is really super-serious that, 'oh noez - she's a spinster!' (-:

This! Poor, poor Spinster, see her unattractive outfit and boring hair, see her shy in terror from a man! (Who does get rather creepy in about five seconds, but still).

Poor Spinster - her life, it is over.

AYRT. His life was put in perspective, because Clarence showed him a ridiculously depressing alternative, where everything went straight to hell. Anything would seem better in comparison. If instead he'd seen a world where he left the town like his brother and fulfilled his dreams, he might say "screw it" and kill himself. Clarence was just manipulating him in order to get his wings :P

And like someone said below, even his wife is a spinster, oh the horror and inhumanity. I admit that I chuckled at that point.

And that makes it bad because...? His life wasn't the greatest life possible, no doubt about that, but it could have been way worse, so why be depressed that your life isn't ~perfect~ when it's pretty damn great anyway?

Plus, it wasn't an alternate life where something in his life changed - it was a life where he'd never been born, which is what he wished. He didn't wish "oh, I wish I had been able to leave town and fulfill my dreams". He wished he'd never been born at all. The point was that his life, imperfect and problem-ridden as it was, was far better than not living at all. Rather a massive difference there. I think anyone would be depressed if they were for some reason shown what their life would be like if they'd managed to seize this particular opportunity and have the ideal life, but why should your happiness be predicated on "oh noes my life isn't ~perfect~?" You'd be really setting yourself up for disappointment and looking like a whiny brat while you're at it if that was your attitude.

And maybe it's just me, but I found Clarence's selfish focus on his wings ridiculously hilarious and much more memorable and appealing than "random altruistic all-knowing angel proselytizing at you about your life for no reason."

I did giggle a bit at OH NOES MY WIFE IS A *GASP* LIBRARIAN thing though XD

I kind of like it because it's so dark - like "Mr Smith Goes To Washington", it's this crushingly depressing, realistic, almost overly grim movie about American life and how it can lead to complete emotional devastation and how the rich and powerful always win, with completely realistic, depressing endings, and then it has this little magical Deus Ex Machina tacked on and so somehow it's considered a happy movie.

I don't like "Wonderful Life" as much as "Mr Smith" but I still kind of love it just because it is so dark. I don't think this is why most people like it though, and I couldn't explain why they do.

It's a great movie as a MOVIE but it really doesn't need to be a must-see Christmas movie. It wasn't meant to be about Christmas and it's really not about Christmas, so...

Re: Least favorite "must see" Christmas movie

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't either. I think it's because the parts that get referenced or re-enacted all the time - the part where the angel shows him how things would be if he never existed and the scene at the very end where the kid mentions an angel getting its wings - don't make up all that much of the movie. Whenever I catch it on TV, it's always the long, long recounting of his entire life story and while I get that we need to know this stuff for any of it to make sense, I find it extremely boring.

THIS. I think I even made a secret about it.

It's not even so much a least favourite as instinctive horror and a fuckload of "GET THE CONCEPT OF THIS MOVIE AWAY FROM ME"

I keep being surprised by my hatred at it, very unexpected.
