Hyperbole and a Half has an honesty to it that appeals to me regardless of whether or not the author is a "good person". Don't know the other comic, but really, it looks like it is about a dude and I get enough stuff about dudes from mainstream media so... recommendation rejected.

Agreed. Even the small bits of honesty, first example coming to mind being the cake one, and the exaggeration of trying to get her mother's pity - an exaggeration, but also sort of how that situation really feels when you're a kid. I saw myself in that one so much, even though I never actually stole a cake.

I think the honesty is definitely a lot of the appeal. And the fact that the creator doesn't come across as a good or a bad person in the stories - she comes across as an average person who makes a lot of the same ridiculous mistakes or does a lot of the same ridiculous things that other people do. It's actually nice to see, since I can look at a lot of her strips and laugh at her talking about things that I often berate myself for. It helps provide some perspective.
