I totally agree that it doesn't make someone less of a fan to not want to watch Old Who, but it's disheartening to see someone mention seeing quite a bit of it and not finding it enriching at all. :(

I can understand finding the look or style of it off-putting (as you said, compared to what TV viewers have come to expect) but there was some fantastic story-telling in Old Who. I think there are a plethora of episodes that - if remade to today's television standards - would stand up too, or outshine most of the new stuff.

But I guess if you can't get past the way it looks, then it's really hard to see beyond that.

It wasn't even how it looks, necessarily. It's just that... idk. I felt like the character stuff wasn't especially strong. There are some good stories in there and I did actually quite enjoy all the Four/Romana I serials and all the Ace/Seven serials and some of the Four/Sarah Jane and Three/Jo serials were ok too, but idk idk. I didn't really connect with the characters as a general rule, so it was harder for me to feel engaged with the story.

And like, I have never felt a need or desire to rewatch any of the serials that I have seen (lol except for "The Happiness Patrol"- my love of that serial defies explanation).

I find that watching Old Who serials is a bit of a slog character-wise simply because the style is so different, but the cumulative effect of all the tiny little subtle character bits adding up together over the course of the episodes really pays off beautifully in summation if you watch enough of it.

However, I totally get why someone wouldn't enjoy slogging through all that -- I didn't bother, for quite a long time, because I just didn't get any enjoyment out of it. And I'm also used to watching old television, so I have built up a tolerance for the slooooowness and emphasis on the characters doing stuff without ever really talking about it or connecting with it openly, which can get tiresome sometimes. Or actually, a lot of the time.

You know - I can understand that. I think part of what makes New Who relatable is the companions/characters - and if you can't find a way to connect with them, it'd be tough to watch the older stuff. There are definitely some series that I have trouble watching (and some companions *coughPericough* that annoy the crap out of me). Though I think that some of the particular Doctor/Companion combinations you've mentioned were some of the best - including all the current incarnations. (Four was the current Doctor when I started watching, but Seven is 'MY' Doctor).

Ehhh...maybe I am a little bit too *hey you kids get off my lawn* about it. I got a bit too 'don't be put off by what it looks like!' - when obviously you weren't and have given it a fair shake. So, ignore my grumbling.

Oh gods... Happiness Patrol! Yeah, that's one of those episodes that defies description and logic to begin with! But, I rewatch it anyway because I will always have the deepest affection for Sylvester McCoy singing a snippet of 'As Time Goes By'.
