Yes, let's forget that, for once, the girl is totally doing something to save herself and it's not about the guy and she doesn't seem to be vilified or seen as selfish for her want to save herself. That's totally not a step forward on its own.

did you miss the part where there's a guy awkwardly shoehorned in for no reason other than WOMEN MUST HAVE LOVE INTEREST while the original tale was all about women helping other women or what

...The original tale was about a girl who went on a journey to save a boy she liked. What are you even talking about?

The original tale did not have this guy, though, so he IS awkwardly shoehorned in. By all rights it should have been a girl standing next to the heroine in that picture, since it's solely women she adventured with in the story while Kai cooled his heels waiting for rescue, but it's Some Dude, which doesn't bode well for other female characters.

It doesn't change that the original isn't as progressive as everyone is thinking it is. From what I remember of it, the robber girl only lets Gerta go because... Because she finds it sweet that she's risking her life for a guy. It still comes down to Kai being the biggest motive. She's still doing everything for a guy.

Meanwhile, Olaf appears to be nothing more than a TRAIL GUIDE right now.

I've never thought about it like that before, to be honest. I still would have preferred the story to have stayed with the girl rescuing the boy (hey, if Sailormoon did it....) but thanks for the fresh perspective.

It's what bugs me about this whole thing. The original story is basically about as progressive as princess getting rescued by the prince. The motives still come down to a boy. It doesn't matter how many women she travels with, her motives are STILL all about a guy.

So I'm very glad her motives change and the entire conflict is between sisters and not just over some guy.
