Then vote with your wallet, make a difference with where you spend your dollar. Start lifting up other tales from other counties, and cultures. Start supporting people, who write those stories. Make the difference.

It's not going to happen right away, but it will happen eventually.

I don't know why so many are just content to bitch at white writers (I'm assuming they are here), and rely on them completely for 'more diversity'.

As much as it bores me, (Oh, look another Disney movie based on a European fairy tale) I can see why they do it. They translate while for their brand. That is Disney has built a whole empire around making old and medieval Europe look like a magical, wondrous place with castles, knights, princes and princesses. ESPECIALLY Medieval European princesses. That's where most of the profit is.

Is it right? Doesn't matter to the stockholders. They only care about the money and making sure the brand keeps going to continue the profits. Would I like something different? Of course, I would. Am I going to hold my breath in wait that they do something different? Nope.

If this is based off of the Anderson story of "The Snow Queen," then people who scream about the main characters being Scandanavian have exactly zero room to complain because the story never leaves Scandanavia. Fairly certain most people who are ethnic natives of Scandanavia tend to be white.

Okay, um... is ANYONE genuinely surprised by this? Seriously? Disney's bread and butter has always been Western European fairy tales. They've had a few successes outside of that bracket, but for the most part, it's Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm all the way. If you are somehow surprised that their adaptation of The Snow Queen is going back to a typical Disney vaguely medieval-Europe setting, I can only conclude that you severely lack observational skills.

And I say this as someone who really wants to see Disney do more non-white characters (I'm hoping for a gay princess in my lifetime.)

I would pay so much money for a movie about Queen Seondeok ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Seondeok_of_Silla ) because she was, by all accounts, legitimately a kick-ass princess.

But then everyone would be like "Boo, it's ripping off Mulan!" and then I would be forced to set the world on fire.

Is this concept art for Frozen? Sigh. I was really looking forward to that movie being 2D, but lost all interest in it when I found out they changed it to CGI. Anyway, the origin story has caucasian characters in it (It's not an English story) so I can see why they kept it that way. I love the Snow Queen story, too. :(

I'm more annoyed that they changed the story. A girl having to save her man? Awesome. A girl has to save her own heart while a guy saves her, most likely in song? Boring.

i don't even really mind the generic white protagonists, I just hate that the girl looks so so so generic and like Rapunzel that they could've at least gone with something that would be a bit more instantly recognisable as her instead of (seemingly) lifting on the success of another one of their movies.

I'd love to see the woman be a white nordic person with a different facial shape at the very least, and her companion being a Sami of any sort. They're totally cool friends with mild romantic tension that gets resolved saying that they should stay friends + save whoever because they have more important things to do.

Even if they made the characters white (which is less than ideal) at least make them not so /same face/. Jesus Christ.

will always be the ultimate and best adaption of the fairytale imo. I's cheesy at times yes, but the animation, oh look at the beautiful art *w* you don't even have to make it about non-European cultures to make the characters look interesting, seriously Disney, step up your game.

I'm confused, did Jasmine, Mulan, Lilo, Kida & Tiana suddenly cease to exist? They certainly don't all look the same (for that matter, the white characters don't look the same, either).

Wanting more diversity is great. I don't like that some people try to go about it by erasing the diversity that's already there.

ngl, it bothers me far more how badly they're changing up the story, so that (from what I hear) it's basically Tangled but with SNOW :D I'd have been pleased and impressed if Disney had taken the original story and set it featuring a Mongolian princess or perhaps involved Inuit characters in some way, but I wasn't really expecting them to go far outside of the Scandinavian blonde-hair/blue-eyes trope for the main characters. I am, however, incredibly bothered that the story has gone from what's an epic, sweeping tale about a girl going to rescue her best friend and basically being the hero of the story to a girl needing to be rescued by a lumberjack.

Is anyone else's annoyance growing at the way SJW all appear to be Avatards who don't understand that “Inuit” is not a universal term for “brown people who live north of the 60th parallel” any more than “Eskimo” is? The sheer, baldfaced ignorance of being that damn racist is making it even more impossible to take them seriously. Like, you're honestly going to lecture other people about racism when you clearly neither know nor care what you're talking about?

Let's not even pretend you understand that the term "Inuit" itself is a complicated issue, or that you know jack shit about Inupiat OR Yu'pik cultures, okay?

What made me wtf the most is that she looks literally EXACTLY like Rapunzel. The eye color is different (Rapunzel's is green, hers are blue), but that's it. Even the facial expression doesn't help.

I mean you can make a blonde protagonist without making it look identical to the previous one. A different hair style (go short?) and a face shape/eye shape/etc. that wasn't identical would be a good start.

But yeah setting it in a different environment would have been AWESOME. I'm in love with the Argentinean version I saw on tumblr.

Yes, let's forget that, for once, the girl is totally doing something to save herself and it's not about the guy and she doesn't seem to be vilified or seen as selfish for her want to save herself. That's totally not a step forward on its own.
