If this is based off of the Anderson story of "The Snow Queen," then people who scream about the main characters being Scandanavian have exactly zero room to complain because the story never leaves Scandanavia. Fairly certain most people who are ethnic natives of Scandanavia tend to be white.

Just like The Frog Prince took place in New Orleans, right?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The Frog Prince was moved to New Orleans. Frozen was left in its original setting. It makes lots of sense to have black people in New Orleans in the 1920's. It doesn't make lots of sense to have black people in medieval Scandanavia. I wouldn't give any personal fucks if they did put some in, but I wouldn't think that it made sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand that. But they could have moved the tale from Scandinavia to another place, where there is just as much snow, like the Andes, the North Pole, Mongolia... etc. They had options.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's a thought. Why dont' we spend our energy trying to get more stories from non-European cultures told, and less complaining that the European stories don't contain enough non-European characters?

I look at have a change of setting to the United States in that the Unites States can be arguably considered a cultural salad bowl. A nation of immigrants, blah blah.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The original story though specifically deals with Roma and ethnic Lapp (Sami) characters. And Sami, i.e. completely native ethnicity, is not white. Just because the dominant population is white doesn't mean that "ethnic natives" of the area are white, or that you can make everyone in the story white.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The Roma characters I have no problem with, though it depressingly seems that they've been left out for some dumb reason. However. Besides the fact that all the Sami I've ever seen (admittedly I've never been to the Artic, so all the ones I've seen have been in photos) have looked pretty darn white, the majority population of Scandanavia is ethnically Scandanavian. Aka white, often blond.

Wait, Sami aren't white? Could have fooled me.

I hate to blow your obviously narrow mind but white people can be ethnic natives too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
If you look at images of Sami from the early 1900s and before, like when the story is set, they look much less white.

Example:

I love how the people that bitch about 'white' characters, just mean 'North American white' and really have no idea about the white folks from other countries or cultures.

How very american-centric of them.

This is like taking a picture of Amerindians today. There's been a lot of racial intermixing with Caucasians in the last few hundred years, so there are certainly people who more resemble Caucasians than anything else.

Yes, they are. They are just as white as the main population. And the Scandinavian Roma are rather light-skinned as well, they just usually have darker hair.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Sami and we're white

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
go google natives of scandinavia and come back and tell me they're all white

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the Sami? See above. You mean the Roma? They're not native in that sense, because they're nomads originating in India who've settled (in a sense) all over the place. You mean the native Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, Finns, and Icelanders? Fairly certain they're white.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Here, have some Scandinavian Sami. Or did you mean some strange American definition of white? By the way, I live here, and this is the first time I've heard anyone claiming that the local natives weren't white.

It's the Sj definition of white, I think. They don't believe that any ethnic minority can be pale-skinned, hence ethnic minority = not white no matter where they live or what they actually look like. It's kind of a bizarre selective blind spot.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
ah the hilarity of a Scandinavian lecturing another nationality over being narrow-minded about race.

You're fucking ignorant. The Sami have lived in Scandinavia for at least as long as the more familiar white people.
