Ugh, for real. Every time I see a writer talk about how it's boring to write about happy people I just want to shake them and point out that it's not very fucking interesting to watch/read about people who are constantly miserable, either.

So damn true. Angsty emo edgy shit for it's own sake bores me to tears. If a developing character turns out to be happy, let that character be happy, geez! It doesn't even have to be about happy people, it has to be about interesting people and constantly miserable people or situations are not interesting. Teh grimdarks is just another device to be used with care in writing, like any other. Overuse it, and the writing will suck.

Best not to read fanfiction. At least not about characters that you have this kind of attachment for. There are many, many shows, books, and movies that I enjoy that I don't seek out the fandoms for, because I don't crave what other people have to offer about them.

Because, on the other side of the coin, it's not much fun to be around people white-knighting fictional characters, either.

I think the OP was referring to canon (ongoing series - especially those that have different writers), but you do bring up a good point. Sometimes people will read so much fan-fiction that a common fanon interpretation will replace the actual canon. So if a writer takes a character someplace that conflicts with the fanon, they've screwed them up (even if it syncs with canon).

Of course, the characters can also get screwed over in actual canon - such is the dangers of having a long-running series with different creative teams.

I could not agree more. Especially when it seems to have no real point other than shock value and they add absolutely nothing to a storyline. I like dark things and bittersweet endings, but bad shit happening just for the sake of being edgy is irritating as fuck.
