The people who give concrit with your attitude, anon, are universally shitty at it. Their priorities are all in the wrong place, looking at the equation as how the writer has somehow wronged their fic reading experience, rather than how they can be supportive of the writer.

Writing concrit that is actually constructive and not just a mishmash of personal preferences, vague unactionable criticisms, vents, reader entitlement that a fic didn't go the way they hoped or expected, and just flat out bad advice, takes a hell of a lot of work and actually requires you to know the writer and what they can handle. You don't care what they can handle, so you are lost right there.

Remember, concrit is not punishment for a bad fic. It's supposed to be helpful. Yelling at someone for being a shitty writer is not helpful.

You want to vent about a fic, go to fanficrants or any number of anonmemes. You want to actually help a writer, offer to be a beta, develop a relationship with her, some mutual trust, and then you can really make a difference.

Marry me, anon.

You assume everyone giving concrit is trying to punish the author unless they have a personal relationship

Damn. You must've been one of those students who complained to the Prof/TA/Teacher about B+

WHY ISN'T IT AN A WHAT DID I DO WRONG I thought you liked me

Actually where I come from, you are supposed to talk to your teacher after getting your grade to see what can you do to improve yourself. Strange that there are people who refuse to ask for a little bit of advice.

People who ask how they can improve a grade are a very different animal compared to people who complain about the grade they got.

Students like that are awesome!

I'm talking about the pseudo-accusatory "I was expecting ___ . . ." or "How dare you give me ___"

The people who give real concrit get the same response however. It's rarely so black and white as you paint it.

What you re describing isn't actually concrit at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, but it's the majority of criticism that gets leveled at fic. Most of it is completely unhelpful whiny bullshit because you didn't get to read the story you wanted.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-12-25 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I won't disagree with you. But an author needs to be ready for that too, since as you said they'll get it. They really should have the ability to tell the difference as well when the other thing comes their way. But even if they don't, they shouldn't be surprised that what is is. or whining about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Or, you know, people should know better and quit being assholes who think random strangers owe them stories they want to read.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
and anyone with half a brain can separate the legitimate criticism from the whiny bullshit. if they can't, they shouldn't even be on the internet in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweetie, people are on the internet and you know how people are. You're going to find the same whiners, losers, procrastinators and judgey fucks trying to dictate who gets to do what that you find everywhere else.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Aye sadly sometimes the good, gets thrown out with the bad. Or the author gets so much bad advice, that they just shut it all off completely.

Fic sites need a rating system for concrit givers, some way for an author to know this person actually want to help....

Not everyone can use concrit, even if its well done. Either they don't trust the person giving the concrit (which you know, why should they) or else they just can't tollerate it emotionally. This is why it's best to ask whether they want it before you waste your time and effort giving it to them.

But also, no one teaches how to write concrit -- and naturally, most people who try, like any beginner with little feedback, are terrible at it. A lot of people have very odd ideas of what is actually useful to the author to hear.

Nor is concrit the only thing that will help a writer improve. Personally, I find the most helpful thing that readers can do is speculate on what they think will happen next and how the characters make them feel. It's not concrit, but it lets me know if what I'm trying to do is actually working.

no. your emotional fragility isn't my problem. If you can't handle what is gonna come at you, don't post.

The world will not change how it is for you. Asking it to just invites scorn.

>>or else they just can't tollerate it emotionally.

Look, I wouldn't leave concrit on an author who explicitly says they don't want it. That's just weird unless they're doing something disgusting.

But I'm also not going to act like everyone on the internet must be treated with kid gloves because feelings.

>> Personally, I find the most helpful thing that readers can do is speculate on what they think will happen next and how the characters make them feel.

This sounds really self-indulgent. So's fanfiction in general, of course. But "only leave comments that give me warm fuzzies, nothing addressing my actual writing. How does this scene about the two trolls/sayins/sailor scouts kissing make you feel" and no "hey this paragraph was kind of confusing" is... odd.
velvet_mace: (Default)

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-12-25 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
It may sound indulgent to you, but to me it's very, very useful. It tells me if I'm preparing my audience, or if I've gone completely amiss. And sometimes I have gone amiss. The audience is confused, when they shouldn't be, or they are mad when they shouldn't be, then I know I have to go back and do some rewriting and clear things up. If they are hating on a character that I didn't mean to be hated on, then I need to do something to tone that character down and give him some redeemable qualities. If they are thinking the story is going one way and I mean them to think it is going another, or if it's too obvious which way I'm going if I mean to be putting in a twist, I can go back and rewrite parts to get the reaction I want.

I don't tell people to write these comments. They comment or not as they feel, however they feel, but in general, they've been most helpful and honing things.

Generally, I don't find it useful when someone says they just don't like the way I've written something, because, hell, what am I supposed to do with that.

As for the friend I had who couldn't handle criticism. Fuck you. I loved her fic and people made her want to delete it. I don't care if she has a ego like glass, as long as she writes stories I crave reading, she is making my fandom experience so much better.
chardmonster: (Default)

[personal profile] chardmonster 2012-12-25 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think your friend having an ego like glass is a problem?

That's a terrible way to live. I was a bit like that in high school and it made life miserable. I'm really thankful I had people in my life who didn't just validate the way I was beating myself up and actually helped me get used to being made fun of. They didn't say "oh they're mean, just don't go outside, Chardmonster." They said "they're being mean, here's ways to deal with it."

The fact is, when you step out into the real world, people are going to give you useless criticism. If you care about your friend you're going to help her. Not demand the world turn velvet.

Protip: being a dickface just because you can isn't helping anyone.
