I'm annoyed when they feel they need to shoehorn romance into a story that really has no room in the plot for it. Of which that was a prime example. It effected precisely nothing. Not the main plot. Not the sub plots. Not the character arcs. Nothing.

It was almost as if the script were already finished and ready to go, when someone said, "Oh shit, the studio insists we put in a romance, quick think of something." "Hey, let's put in a sketchy, one-sided crush that goes no where." "Perfect. Just keep it under four minutes, this movie's running a little long."

Yeah, that'd be the whole bit about the Romulans blowing up Vulcan. I can see how you might miss it being that it only took about 2 hours of the show.
