Well, she did kiss Kirk at one point. All sorts of scandalous back then, a black woman kissing a white man.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
This is true. And it's very likely they would have had a romantic relationship if they hadn't been different races. Apparently, when they were shooting that episode, the powers that be made them shoot two takes - one where Kirk and Uhura kissed each other for real, one where she kissed him on the cheek. And Nichelle Nichols and Shatner, in every take that they shot of the kiss on the cheek, made the most ridiculous, absurd, overdramatic facial expressions possible, explicitly so that they wouldn't be able to use any of those takes for the finished product.

As problematic as that episode still is, I still completely love that story. And yes I responded to this secret just to tell it.

The plotline had aliens mind-controlling Kirk and Uhura into kissing one another. IIRC, Kirk even apologizes to Uhura, who later says something along the lines of how ashamed she is.

TV's first interracial kiss = not positive :-(

I was just saying the same thing when we saw a trailer before the Hobbit the other day!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, according to Abrams, Uhura was originally written to be paired with Spock, but it was too controversial at the time, so Roddenberry decided to leave it out.

So really, the only reason that the original series was more "progressive" was because of racism (interracial relationships were seen as wrong).

Score one for irony.

Lenoard Nimoy was white though, so that'd still have applied.

Also, there were some episodes specifically about social issues.

Posting one of the more obvious examples

They had hints of it in the original series (see: the flirting in Charlie X if you want one example), but like you said, it basically got nixed by the network. A lot of the stuff that they managed to do in TOS they had to figure out a way to sneak past the network execs, a lot of whom were pissed that Nichelle Nichols was on the show at all.

That sounds true. Nichelle Nichols said:

"By that time, I didn't think of it as The First inter-racial kiss. I just got the script, and I said 'Oh, wow, great! We're going to get a little romance in here!' [...] Not many people know this, but it was originally written as being between Uhura and Spock. But Bill Shatner said 'Oh no! If anyone is going to get to kiss Nichelle, it's going to be me!' And so they rewrote it, and we all laughed about it."

While I don't like what you're talking about in general I think the couple you've pictured have a lot going for them. I think their relationship can really provide a lot of growth and moments for character development for both of them.

I don't even ship Spock/Uhura but I can recognize and respect its potential.

Now, do I think the first movie tapped into that potential? Not... really, I'll admit. However, I have hope for the sequel.

I gotta say I pretty much agree. Uhura in TOS might have been a minor character, but it was way more dignified than "Spock's girlfriend, used as a plot device for male characters' story and development".

And the thing is, TOS!Uhura was actually REALLY flirty with TOS!Spock in a "ooh a challenge!" way, and he was plenty flirty back in a sort of "hmm scientific curiosity!" way. Which was something that really threw both characters' personalities and identities into sharp relief. If they'd had that dynamic, but more explicit, in the film, I'd have eaten it up with a spoon.

I just wish Abrams would keel over so he can't shit on the franchise anymore than he already has. Nu!Trek is fucking retarded, and if you liked the movie as anything more than a garden variety popcorn-muncher with pretty explosions, we can't be friends.

I'm annoyed when they feel they need to shoehorn romance into a story that really has no room in the plot for it. Of which that was a prime example. It effected precisely nothing. Not the main plot. Not the sub plots. Not the character arcs. Nothing.

It was almost as if the script were already finished and ready to go, when someone said, "Oh shit, the studio insists we put in a romance, quick think of something." "Hey, let's put in a sketchy, one-sided crush that goes no where." "Perfect. Just keep it under four minutes, this movie's running a little long."

I disagree that it's a rule that the token chick has to hook up with anyone.

It's a rule that there HAS to be a romance and there HAS to be a token chick.

I 100% agree. It's sad we can't see any cool women in films unless their presence is justified by banging one of the dudes.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Read this:

http://peri-peteia.livejournal.com/340736.html

It explains that interracial relationships, especially ones where a black woman gets some love, are still rare. Positive portrayals of black women are rare, but even rarer too when she's deemed 'worthy' of love.

I've shipped S/U since TOS and I was pleased as punch that it was finally able to happen here. I understand the value of a woman not always being the love interest (hence part of my love for Joan Watson) but S/U is a clear sign of progress in its own way too. Hell, there were only two reasons Uhura was allowed to be shown kissing anyone in TOS:

1. It was an 'aliens made them do it' kiss, not consensual.
2. Shatner and the cameraman intentionally fucked up all the non-kiss takes of the scene to force the execs to take one with the kiss.

Uhura is allowed to be a desirable woman now. She's allowed to be part of a consensual romance now. That's progress too.

In "Mirror, Mirror" Uhura had to flirt with Sulu. IDK if that's better or worse....I know she seemed squicked out by it, at first, but by the end, she realized, "Hey, my counterpart made it this far in this universe, and they all think she's a BAMF without putting out" (cf. Sulu's comment when she started pouring on the charm) and she rolled with it.

Oops. Sorry. I just wanted to geek out on "Mirror, Mirror" a little bit. Carry on.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
JJ has said that the only reason they were a couple is that after the destruction of Vulcan and the death of his mother, Spock really, really needed a hug, and with the state of the Kirk/Spock relationship at that point, Kirk couldn't give it to him. So, he had Uhura do it and gave them the relationship to make it plausable.

So, you know, puts a different perspective on things?

I think some people tend to underestimate the role that Uhura played in the movie. Yeah, I would have loved to see more scenes of her being a linguistic badass, but if it weren't for her being so capable when it came to languages and picking up the message from the Klingons about their ships being destroyed by Nero, then Kirk may not have realized that they were walking into an ambush or been able to convince Pike of as much. She also helped serve as a grounding force for Spock, who was going through some pretty major shit since his entire planet essentially got fridged. Spock wasn't really close enough at that point to any of the other crew members for that kind of relationship to have worked with anyone else. It didn't necessarily require that his relationship with Uhura be romantic and not just friendship, but as someone else pointed out in a previous comment, the fact is that women of color don't generally get to be romantic love interests in movies like this, so that is a degree of progress of its own.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-26 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
oh noes not this again Lord have mercy

http://peri-peteia.livejournal.com/340736.html
was even cited here:
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/routledg/rfms/2012/00000012/00000003/art00002

and by the way, Uhura is not just the love interest of the main hero. She's Spock (fucking SPOCK) love interest. I repeat: SPOCK.
Chapel is crying blood tears.
Being Spock's love interest is worthy of notice you gotta give her a lot of credit here for being the only woman in the history of star trek that made him fall in love without using spores and other crap like that. And she's black. And she out logic him when he assigned her to the farragut. She accepts him but she doesn't take his crap.
