No. She, myself, and those like us are the solution. TO your crappy writing. You are failing to be part of the solution with us. By being so shit at criticism and being a big kid who can wipe ones own ass without a pat on the head.

There is no solution to crappy writing. It will always exist. Being an asshole on the internet will not change this, and is far more likely to inspire even more crappy writing just to spite you.

Yeah I am seriously a bit disturbed by this comparison of 'fanfic' to 'crayon drawing'. Sure, that's where we all start out, but don't most of us want our work to get a little bit better than that?

If we're doing it just for fun? No, not really. I realize the idea that people engage in fandom activities and really don't care about improving because they're just having fun is blowing your art school mind, but come the fuck on.

I'm not surprised. I just laugh my ass off at people like you, because your pointless crusade and how seriously you take yourselves about free entertainment is hilarious.

Part of the joy of fanfic is sharing the squee. That is the entirety of what some people want out of the activity and it doesn't have to be good fic to do that.

You can quit the elitism. I have no formal artistic or creative education, and I haven't even done creative writing in school since I was 16, but I would like to think that that doesn't disqualify me from either learning to be a better writer or from being aware of what good writing is. I am not comfortable with this idea that one has to be a member of an elite in order to engage with the words we all write - in fact, I always hope that fandom was a testament against that view.

While I have zero interest in ever writing for a living - seriously, none, that sounds like hell on earth to me - I get a lot of satisfaction out of the gradual improvement of my skills as a writer. You can't really write without noticing that curve, either; things that used to be hard/intimidating become easy. If you care about engaging with fandom at all, improving is one of the things you're caring about because it is happening every moment of every day. It's part of the process and I don't think it should be discounted that casually.

Um...not everyone is you. I write or draw or whatever I feel like doing because it's fun, and I only post it because I think others might have fun looking at it. I don't care about improving. I'm happy with my work the way it is. You don't like it? Tough shit.

I'm not going to go out there assuming that no one is like me, though. Given that inevitable improvement curve, it wouldn't make sense to assume that people who write a lot don't care about improvement.

I would rather assume people are doing it for fun and not piss in their corn flakes. I'm not hurting anybody by keeping my mouth shut, and I don't think my opinion is special enough that they've got to hear it.

Fun and improvement are not mutually exclusive. I write for fun, but I also want to get better at it. What's the fun in a hobby if you aren't trying your best at it? I want to be able to point at the things I've written and be proud of them.

Because the hobby itself is fun enough on its own? I don't give a rat's ass about the quality of the end result, and I don't need to hold it up as some great accomplishment.

o I know, caring about your work (or anyone else's) would be so uncool and probably not ironic enough.

Uh, no. I don't care about the quality of my work because I just don't care. I know it sucks, but that's not important to me because I had fun doing it. Is it really that hard of a concept for you?

The fun is the part where it's not work. My job involves crash carts and CPR and people occasionally being sheetwrapped and wheeled out to the morgue. My fic does not need to be great to help me get away from that and I don't have the time, energy or the will to try to become the next Shakespeare. I'd rather put my serious efforts into sending less people out the door in sheets, you know. Unless they clearly state it, you never know what somebody is getting out of writing fanfic. Don't assume it's the same thing you look for from yours.

Yeah, no. It doesn't work that way. You make fandom free of crappy writing, you make fandom too much of a punishment to be worth writing in. Even good writers think twice when crappy writers are trounced on. Nothing kills a community faster than when they start putting up rules about what qualifies as good writing.

Fandom is about fun. You aren't having fun reading someone's peice of shit writing, you stop wasting your fucking day on it. Hit the back arrow button, and move on.

Now some of us writers really do want to improve, but people like you don't help us. With your attitude, I wouldn't trust your opinions. And why should I? Why should I believe you have more insight on how to write a better story than I, the person who wrote the damn thing, has? You cast doubt on my qualifications as a writer, but what are your qualifications as a critic? Just as going to high school doesn't make you an expert on how to run a high school, reading a fic doesn't make you an expert on how to improve it.
