Just my two cents, but while I think it's completely fine and legitimate to feel upset, it's not a good idea to try to shut down that experience - writers do not have the right to never be upset about their writing. God knows we do it to ourselves all the time.

If someone says "Your writing sucks" your options are either a), look at your writing and determine that it does not suck, and be proud of it and say as much, or b) look at your writing and figure out how to reduce/remove the suck. I think either of these routes can help build who you are as a writer.

No, there's a third one. There's "I've done as much as I can with this writing, it may suck, but it's the best it will ever be."

Yeah - that's it, that tends to be my position at the end of the day. It's not perfect, but it's done. And I am completely fine with that and will happily engage with crit, especially if it helps show me what feelings I stirred up this time or if it helps me make the next time even better.

So I am really, really sad at all the people who hold back because crit isn't ~nice~ and might be ~upsetting~.

I hold back because I don't think my opinion matters to the author. Or at least it shouldn't.

Me, I post knowing full well my work sucks. Who likes it, great. Who doesn't, tough. I'm not looking to improve, so criticism is about as useful to me as a terrycloth umbrella.
