virus removal?

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2012-12-27 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
hey FS. so I've had a virus on my computer for probably about a month now (it's adware). I'm pretty sure I know how I got it; I was trying to download a program to convert video files and I ended up downloading some really sketchy ones, so it was 100% my fault. I tried this program called Ad-Aware already, but it didn't work. anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost to get this sort of virus removed professionally? also, where might I go to do this? I know of best buy, but where else is there?

Um, I'm not really an expert so you may want to look around more but if it's not malware, which I have a different thing for, you may want to look at SUPERAntiSpyware. It looks horrible, like it's old and can't do squat or might be a virus itself but it's actually quite good. You can find it here if you want to give it a try. It's worked really well for me so far.

Just realized it could be malware, as the people below me said. So I third Malware Bytes, as I use it too. I don't know why I thought it wasn't malware...

I assume you have a PC? If there are dedicated computer and electronics stores in your area - something like TigerDirect - they should have computer techs. I've no idea how much it'll cost or what the cost structure is like. It's possible there's an initial assessment fee on top of whatever it'll cost to remove the adware.

Generally speaking, back your files before sending your computer off for servicing because a complete disk erasure and system re-install may be required. The techs are not responsible for the loss of data that may occur in such cases. Also, make sure the techs are reputable since you are leaving personal data with other people. Techs from big companies are generally okay and so are your tech-savvy friends, but friends-of-friends and your local mom-and-pop computer shop are not a good first choice unless they have a trustworthy reputation.

If you want to have another crack at removing the adware yourself, try Malware Bytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/). If the program detects the adware but has trouble removing it, try running Malware Bytes in Safe Mode (this is how to access the startup menu and enter Safe Mode for Windows computers (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm)). If Malware Bytes can't detect the adware or can't remove it in Safe Mode, get someone to look at it. Or Google "remove [name of adware] [name of windows operating system]" if you want to fiddle around with it yourself some more.

Also, have you uninstalled the bad video converter program yet? Sometimes a simple uninstall removes the adware.

Sometimes.

Good luck!

-agentcthulhu, whose computer died last week and is having trouble connecting to the net anyway so it's not like anything changed much...

I can second Malware Bytes. AdAware isn't really up to snuff these days, and I used to swear by it.

Panda Cloud Antivirus and AVG Free Edition have worked wonders for me.

If they can't remove it for some reason but can detect it, copy the name, google it and find how to remove it manually.

Be prepared for the possibility of having to reformat your entire hard drive and lose anything not backed up, though.

(And on very, very rare occasions, be prepared for the possibility of them rare super viruses that jump reformats and linger forever and ever in the hard drive. It fucking ATE the free space in a few minutes. Gave me nightmares. D:)
