How about you wait until they actually have sex before making assumptions that he's going to rape her?

Since when was Edward Cullen Spiderman?

Oh... For PITY'S SAKE, Marvel, didn't we talk about this all during the whole Chameleon debacle?

Stoppit.

tbh i'm more concerned about wtf the artist thought when they were drawing that. i'd pinpoint a specific bit, but it's all horrible D:

I find something a bit odd with her jaw and her neck seems a bit too long and thin to actually support her head, but I don't know if that's what you're seeing.

That's just Humberto Ramos. It's an acquired taste.

In one of the other panels just prior to that MJ is cross-eyed, so I wonder if the artist is just holding a grudge.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I actually quite like this style. It's nice to see something that actually /does/ have a distinct style, rather than being a blatant trace-over.

That artwork.

That. Artwork.

I just stared at this pic for a few minutes with my mouth open in awestruck, fascinated horror, trying to figure out what kind of insane troll logic the artist and editor were using to delude themselves into thinking that artwork was remotely acceptable to put into a published work. There isn't even some kind of "Buffness Rulez!" or titillation factor to explain it. Just...wat.

Marvel's been using this artist for a long time -- since 2003 at least.

Speaking of rape, was anyone else disturbed by Peter living through Doc's memories of having sex with his aunt? I figured it was meant to be funny, but he didn't want to experience that, and it's a violation of May's privacy, too. It really just creeped me out.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention the whole body swapping and dying that. That kinda sounds bad too. I could fucking be wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
What is even going on with her face? I'm too busy being offended by bad art to worry about the secret's content, tbh.

Isn't the grossness the point?

I don't know the comic well, but Bad Things Happening To Sympathetic Character are probably supposed to be interpreted by you as A Bad Thing

Last I checked Doc Ock's a bad guy and does bad things

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, nowdays rape is just another bad thing that happens to you. "So today I stubbed my toe, lost my wallet and oh, yeah, I got raped on my lunch break."

I just love how the secret's about the OP being horrified by the concept of Mary Jane not realizing she's with Otto Octavius right now rather than Peter and being disgusted by the implications, and yet half of the comments in this thread are "YEUGH THAT ART OFFENDS MY SENSIBILITIES, GOD IF YOU'RE GONNA RAPE A GIRL IN COMICS AT LEAST MAKE SURE IT'S DRAWN WELL"

I like rapefic. Maybe I'd be interested in this, though probably not. Not much into the whole superhero genre.

Is it just me, or...

What is it with some American comic book artists and giant upper lips?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Come on, guys, I thought we all agreed that nothing Spider-Man is comic book canon after OMD!

(Except for Ultimate Spider-Man, I mean)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the art.

The writing on the other hand makes me want to hold a pillow over Dan Slotts face untill he stops kicking. It't the kindest thing at this point.

Can't speak to the Spider-Man part (don't read, wouldn't want to) but I hate the trope of one character being replaced by another, and none of their loved ones noticing. I know it's common as dirt. But although there are variations on the idiot ball that I don't mind seeing used as a joke, this one is not funny to me at all. And supers have enough issues with feeling like all people can see of them is their exterior. When this plot is sorted out, Spidey coming to grips with the fact that the love of his life can't tell the difference between him and one of his sworn enemies pretending to be him just ... anyone who is entertained by that is looking at the story from a completely different perspective. (And I wouldn't be surprised if "I had sex with Doc Ock?" is the least of it, for Mary Jane.) I wouldn't be 100% against stories playing that out, if they did a better job handling consequences. But as just another twist and a reason to beat the shit out of the villain at the end of the arc, it's cheap and ugh.

I'm not taking the "it's rape" part that seriously because if there's any Marvel or DC comic book villain that can't be easily tweaked by the writers into a rapist, I'm not thinking of who. It's a rapey, het sex = fanservice medium. Given those parameters, I save my indignation for when they make the women stupid (and mostly, I save my attention for media that doesn't want to make me headdesk quite as often). If I gave them money or expected better, though, I might be agreeing with the OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the whole thing is disgusting. Not just Mary Jane. She could potentially never know the difference and/or never even have sex with him. Peter however, is dead. And died a slow death while seeing shit through someone's memories and someone he knew was going to take over his life.

OCK-Peter is probably going to revert to normal Peter eventually but the original Pete's consciousness went out terribly. Mary Jane is the last of the troubling shit about this mess.
