I'll take my chances with a baseball bat rather than get shredded by assault rifle fire

Assault rifles aren't legal here. But hey, if you feel unsafe in America, why don't you head up to Norway - they've got great gun-control laws. You'll love their youth camps.

Did you just seriously write that? I knew some people didn't like you, and I have defended you up to a point because I haven't seen you do anything stupid. But this is crossing a line!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly.

This is downright insensitive.

For pointing out that mass shootings also happen in countries with strict gun laws? In a conversation about assault weapons? What happened in Norway was a tragedy, without question, but if you're going to go on about how unsafe guns make America, you do have to acknowledge the fact that shootings happen in places where there's tighter gun control.

Oh you can point it out as much as you want, but do not make light of 77 peoples deaths. Not to mention all of whom got injured, some of them my friends.

And at no point in my comment did I go out on Americas gun politics, or any countries for that matter, I said guns makes it easier to kill.

And even with the deaths of all those people, Norway still have less gun related crime than most countries. So you might want to look at the whole picture before you make comments like that.

I didn't mean to make light of it, I apologize. What happened was a terrible tragedy.

Wow. Can't believe you went there.

And yet, only 107 people died because of a firearm in Norway in 2009. In the US, same year? 9,146. That's just counting homicides.

Given a choice, I'll stick to Norway, thanks.

1. You can't have a conversation about how gun control stops gun crime without acknowledging that this isn't always the case. Most all gun crimes incidents, by their nature, are going to be pretty depressing.

2. You have to take the % of the US vs Norway's populations into account if you want to prove your point with numbers. Also, compare it to overall homicides to see if it actually brings the rate down, as opposed to just bringing the gun-homicide rate down.

3. Norway is a lovely country. If you don't mind the winter cold and extended dark, I'm sure you'd have a good time there.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Yes. But there are ways to do it. Using a mass shooting to give an edge to your comment was insensitive.

2.
The ratio is 2,98 per 100,000 in the US (9,146 people were intentionally killed by a gun) and 0.19 in Norway in 2009 (9 homicides, but there were 107 deaths because of a firearm that year, counting suicides and accidents).

If we count the overall homicide rate, in 2009, it's 0.6 in Norway (29), 4.96 in the US (15,241). This table from the FBI gives a comprehensive overview, per US state, of number of homicide vs weapons used (http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_20.html)

3. I don't mind the winter cold, I'd like to visit Norway (and Scandinavia as a whole) one day.

1. I could have been more sensitive about it, you're right. I apologize.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
All right then, I forgive you. Apology accepted.

Copy/pasting what I've written above:
