We all have different tastes and experiences with fandom. If what you're doing is enjoyable to you, then you're indeed 'doing it right'.

I went through a period of this of several years. Then I gradually got back into fic for a new fandom. Now, for the first time, I'm writing as well as reading and still enjoying meta. I think these are all ways of doing fandom, and you're no less fannish for enjoying the meta aspect of it for awhile.

You might be interested in reading some acafan work, if you haven't already. Henry Jenkins' books are interesting. Cyberspaces of Their Own is a little dated now, but still interesting. And there're some interesting articles in the OTW's Transformative Works journal. (http://journal.transformativeworks.org/index.php/twc)

Well done on the overuse of the word 'interesting' there, me.

I don't scour for fanfic anymore. I basically have about a handful of authors that I'll read sometimes if they post something new and I'm mildly interested.

Oddly, I still write fanfic (though not as much - probably two or three new stories a year).

I'm the same way, OP. After 6-7 years in fandom, my activity has soled down a little. It feels sort of like being in the balcony seats of fandom vs. being in the mosh pit, which is totally fine. I'm still enjoying it, I just don't have the time or energy to be as active as I used to be.

I'm actually a lot like this too! I do read fanfic sometimes, but most of my fandom participation is, as you say, second-hand, talking about it rather than being part of it. Mainly because I just don't have the time and I'm busy with RL stuff, but also because...well, observing it tends to be more fun.

this secret makes me wonder if I created it in my sleep or something.

this is me. all of it.

I was like this for about five years at one point, then got sucked into an active fandom again. I found that I still regarded myself as being a fan even though I only read a couple of fics a year and was barely even trying to write fic. The great thing about fandom is that it's going to still be there for you when you want it again.

You and me both, OP. I've even gotten lazy with recommendation com's. Sometimes I feel a little guilty, but mostly I have no regrets. After wading through so much terrible fanfic, it's actually kind of a relief to be taking a "vacation" from all of it.

Your picture choice is top notch!

I'm similar...haven't read fanfic not written by a friend in...whoo...forever. Haven't read fanfic in general in a while, either.

Most of my fan experience is discussing what I watch or read - usually in general spaces, or official ones, rather than specific fandom ones, since they're less prone to 'what the hell?' behaviour.

I mostly get the 'proper' fandom experience by looking for fanart.

I feel similarly, too. I think it's partly to do with growing older and having a lot more responsibilities to take care of instead of being able to guiltlessly mess around all day, but I find myself really wishing I could be more majorly involved again sometimes.

OP, if you're appreciating, thinking about and talking about whatever book/show/game etc. that's what makes you a fan. Whatever floats your boat.

YANA. I'm sort of involved in Avengers and Korra, but mostly, I read this comm.

Most people enjoy things without being in fandom-it's supposed to be fun, not an obligation. That's what work is for.
