Eh, lots of other people read it because their teacher/college professor made them, or their friend told them to. There are worse things to do under peer pressure.

Yeah, I pretty much picked it out of a list in high school. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it and the dark sense of humor.

I read it for a class in high school. It's a good book, though, and I later went out and bought a personal copy, so I can re-read it whenever I want. As long as you're not a smug ass about it, who cares why you read it in the first place?

Well, good for you, but then again it's not exactly Ulysses, but rather a fun and not particularly difficult read.

Yeah, I'm one of those who are not impressed by the mere fact of someone reading books. It's normal.

I would probably be the same, but, apparently, there's something wrong with my environment. I just got used to assume automatically that any given person I'm acquainted with doesn't read much, and in 90% of cases I'm right. Therefore I can't help but feel astonished and pleased whenever I encounter a book-lover. It sure is sad, and the fact that I've never managed to meet anybody better read than me myself doesn't exactly help. Not boasting or seeking validation here, it's just sad and it hurts.

Hi, I'm the author of the "cccombo" secret)) IDK, I... don't judge you at all? The wish to have an air of intellectuality is a regular human weakness, it can even be adorable. I don't read books for that reason, but I certainly do sometimes quote them to appear smart. It embarrasses me later on, yet it's my opinion that both your and my ways of self-assertion are better than that of reading books out of some silly sense of duty, not enjoying them, but subsequently pretending that you're.
In any case, the best thing is that you like it. I felt very lonely in my love for the thing. And I'll be happy if you're able to give me some fan recs.

So did I. :D I did genuinely love it and I still do, but that was my impetus for picking it up in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't give a shit. You legitimately liked the book on its own merit and ended up really enjoying it? I don't care why you got into it.

Is it best practices to get into things for the purposes of pretension? No, it's a habit that you oughta get out of, it's not really a great way of looking at the world. But it's not the worst thing in the world ever, it's a natural human inclination, and as you've seen it can lead you to some really great things that you legitimately love.

There are plenty of things in the world that it's a good idea 'to have read' or 'to have watched'. Catch 22 is probably one of the more blatant examples but classic works become part of our cultural landscape. No harm in trying to understand and navigate the waters a little better and if you actually had fun doing it, great!
