Inkmage here, on my phone so I don't want the hassle of logging in.

I have three thoughts here. The first is that a person's orientation has little to nothing to do with how good their writing is. I'm a lesbian and I've written slash that I've been told is very good. I'm a virgin and I've written sex scenes that I've been told are good. I'm awful at athletics and I've written fight scenes that I've been told are very good. And so on. The main signifier these people need isn't "straight," it's simply "inexperienced or lazy writer."

Second, that "lol I'm not gay, guys!" thing is stupid. I just... I'm not gonna get into this rant. Too long and pointless to type on my phone.

Third, is anyone else weirded out by the anatomy here?

Exactly this!

It shouldn't matter what gender or sexuality you are. Why anyone would feel the need to clarify those things baffles me.

Overall I like the drawing, but there IS something iffy about it. Maybe the legs? IDK.

Check out Korra's torso where the bottom of her spine is. I'm not exactly sure what's going on with her pelvis there but I'm pretty sure it's eating the bottom of her abdomen and the top of her legs.

I dunno... I suspect a little of it is YMMV, but she looks like she's curving at the hips, rather than bending, and that makes me think of, like, a macaroni noodle or something. The expressions are great and the rest of it looks fine but just that one part....

ETA: Maybe the reason they're clarifying is because either a) someone they know might be reading it (unlikely), or more easily b) they're young and immature and it's the equivalent of two guys admiring another dude's abs and then telling each other "no homo!" however imperfect that analogy is.

I think that's exactly what it is.

Haha. That (sadly) seems like the most believable explanation. Oh the things people put in authors notes...

Korra's hips don't bother me so much as Asami's calf. What happened there?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was trying to figure out what was off, but I think it's definitely that. Which is a shame because otherwise it's not that bad a picture.

Yeah - maybe you can creatively crop it, heh.

Also, it randomly is bugging me that the shading on Korra's face is really smooth, but on her arm, it's much rougher.

To me it looks like the image has been squished to fit the secret, but the more I stare at it the more I'm not sure...

It has; this is what the original looks like: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m66wg6KMSo1qh8tqlo1_1280.jpg

But it doesn't make Asami's calf look any less atrophied o_O

I'm an asexual/aromantic and apparently surprised someone with still being a virgin. The way I figure it, it's not so much experience as a) reading accurate stuff to learn how to do it and b) good writing skills.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're right and a lot of it is just down to a combination of good research and writing skill. For some people, research may include hands-on experience, but not for everyone.
seiberwing: (Objection!)

Full confession: The few times I had something vaguely resembling sex I was only mining it for fic writing purposes.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Experience helps, but yeah, it really does come down mostly to research and writing skills. At least, I would hope most fic writers haven't actually experienced half the stuff they've written about...
