There's absolutely nothing wrong with teaching people which words are most appropriate, but making a shibboleth of it is (very literally) about denoting cultural group membership, not about activism.

People act like that does something. It doesn't. It doesn't give a homeless gay teen an apartment. It doesn't give a trans person the magical ability to finally use a restroom in peace. It doesn't stop violence. It doesn't keep a person with a disability safe from the very caregivers he relies on, or stop restraint and seclusion in his school. It doesn't pull someone up out of poverty, much less her whole community. It doesn't give her access to safe and legal abortion. It doesn't even make someone stop thinking "N" if you get them to stop saying "N."

All it does is define boundaries. Yet people act like defining those boundaries *is* the work itself.

Yes, to all of this.

Ferocious name-calling on the internet is a distraction, at best. I think it persists exactly because it's a low-risk way of pretending you're doing something. (At a time when the US government is more repressive than ever, and it's fashionable to do your part by railing imaginary oppressors. Not fighting in any substantial way, mind you, just yelling a lot.)

That's exactly how I feel. I thought it was a big important thing too. Then I... got a job... doing... actual activism. I was just like "wait, what the fuck, we had it all so wrong!"

Because real activism is 90% about education, about bringing people to your side of the issue by teaching them about the subject. It's turning opponents into allies or at least into people who aren't actively hostile to your cause. SJW activism, on the other hand, is about insulting people and then saying "it's not my job to educate you".

I never understood how they thought it would do any good, even all the way back to the "racebending" days. The site itself was good but the people behind it? I wanted to scream every time they said "it's not my job to educate you" or "you sound white" or "check your privilege". For once that activism was getting a mainstream stage in a positive light, they were out there making sure that uninformed people (the vast majority that activism wants to touch) would think that all activists are hostile and immature instead of actually making their point and having people listen to their argument.

Most people don't have a strong opinion and don't want to really get involved in those issues beyond a first-level understanding. If you put them off with a bad first impression, they'll quietly turn to the other side of the issue and never think about it again. Saying "well we don't need THOSE" is idiotic because those are the people who make up the silent masses that can turn votes and policies.

It's the same thing with the "anti-ally" sentiment on tumblr. Here's the thing: without allies activism would be NOTHING. You are advocating for the MINORITY, if you want anything to change IRL than you need the MAJORITY on your side. Degrading those of the majority who are standing besides you in your cause because "they shouldn't expect cookies for being decent human beings" is like shooting yourself in the foot. Repeatedly.

TL;DR I really hope SJW don't act IRL like they do online or else they are sabotaging the work of real activists.

Oh that one I can field. Let me explain. (the following is not a troll post)

First, and I've said this before but it bears repeating: People are dicks. Now, if you want to change that to a more gender appropriate role for the community you are thinking of, go ahead. It's the meaning, not the word itself. Intent does matter. :P

But getting back on track, people are dicks. There is a huge population of dicks out there, and no community is immune to their presence. And sadly, somebody being a dick to you doesn't magically give you the empathy to not be a dick yourself if dickishness is part of your nature. If anything, it festers what's bad inside those people.

So, you have a group of angry folks. Angry folks who've had some bullshit in their lives. Legitimately bad bullshit in some cases. And they are angry about the right things! But sadly, a righetous cause doesn't avail you of dickishness either.

So, you have a group of angry folks who've felt ostracized, that didn't belong, and now, thanks to the internet, they find a place with people like them or close enough to it that they have a community!

But that anger is still there. And being what they are, they don't really want justice. Oh, that'd be nice, they aren't opposed to the idea, but that's not what they want more then anything. More then anything, they want REVENGE. To get even. To give some of that hurt back. And it's easy to get caught up in that anger when you have it in you yourself. Suddenly a whole community feels empowered by having it's own club and being exclusionary and coming down on those they feel that deserve their wrath. Often in the same sort of petty "they are different, fuck them" way that the world has treated them. Because having bullshit happen to you doesn't provide perspective either.

The rest get sucked up in the anger, or feel white guilt, or just don't know how to go about these things and think this is the way, or are weak and don't want to be the person who doesn't belong yet again so they become one of the bullies. But that's how it starts.

The fact it's counterproductive is irrelevant. Because it's not really about progress. The good news is most of these SJW are the same beta wussies they've been all their lives, and like most internet tough guys, they will never back up what they are saying in real life. Or, sadly, get involved in any real activism (those people are "too soft") unless it's some extreme group nobody was taking seriously.

Edit: SJW aren't the first time this has happened at all, mind. Most extremist groups on social issues have this kind of mentality to some extent, people who say they are getting together for change but are really there to be angry and rant. You see this both with conservative and liberal groups. And you see it in plenty of other places on the internet on different issues. Hell, you even can find "no girls allowed" angry nerds doing the same kinda butthurt bullshit! They just use different terminology and are more immediately idiotic is all.

I was bullied from first grade until I graduated from high school. And it was merciless; the only thing that kept me from killing myself was the fear that I'd go to Hell. Seriously!

And so many SWJs claim that they were bullied. And I just never got that, because they seem like the biggest bullies around.

I sort of feel sorry for them now. They're still trying their damndest to be part of the Cool Kids Club.

But then again, I don't feel sorry for them at all, because I know how much being bullied hurt. And I have no desire to inflict that hurt on others, and I can't imagine how hurting others would make me or anyone else feel better.

Additionally, I think that it gives them a way to feel good about themselves and log off at the end of the day and give themselves a huge pat on the back. "Good job, upper middle-class female white college student #100562. Another successful day of vanquishing the evils of mildly offensive terminology used out of ignorance from the Internet. You earned yourself a chocolate bar." I'm pretty sure the large majority of them do it either out of fear of going against the group, or out of a sense of unwarranted self-importance.
