21. I think it's stupid when people think that they're better than someone who 'still' likes anime, as if they've personally 'grown out' of it. In all honesty I don't really think it's POSSIBLE to grow out of anime, because there's an anime out there for everyone, at any age. And besides, in my opinion a cartoon is a cartoon, no matter which country it came from.

For a while now I've been avoiding calling myself an 'anime fan' because on the whole, I don't like a lot of it. I like a few shows that would fall under the anime category, but I don't like them BECAUSE they're anime, I like them because I think they're great shows.

Anime is just Japan's way of cartooning. It IS different than American cartooning but mostly because most Americans view cartoons as for children (though I disagree), and Japan tends to think cartoons are for everyone. Because of this, a lot of cartoons in America are predominately juvenile, where as Japan has an EXCESS of animated shows out for every age group.

But Japan still has their fair share of plotless, storyless shows, with no real character development; And America has a great lot of cartoons that AREN’T just a half hour of fart jokes and fodder (ex. Avatar). Avatar having a storyline and developed characters doesn’t make it an anime, and it doesn’t make it LIKE an anime either- it just means that Avatar has a story and character development, which isn’t exclusive to Japanese cartooning.

I guess Avatar’s animation deals with a lot of emotions as anime does (ex. the teardrop, etc.) but I think that’s just because America is trying to appeal to this new popularity of Japan’s style of animation.

Anyway, SORRY LONG COMMENT IS LONG. D: I'm just trying to say I think it's stupid to look down on people for liking either anime or American cartoons, because neither side is better than the other. CARTOONS ARE CARTOONS, YO. D:

This comment wins at life. :) That's everything I've wanted to say on the topic, but much more coherent and readable than I could write out.

The problem is language...for a long, looong time now "anime" has been synonymous with a certain art style, and not for what it originally meant (a simple abbreviation for "animation"). That's why Avatar, or especially Teen Titans, is referred to more as "anime" than "cartoons", which has more Western-style connotations, even though the words technically mean the same damn thing. XD

I don't think they should be treated any differently, as I said in my comment. Anime is also an abbreviation for Japanimation, aka Japanese style animation- reffering to the art style. Which Avatar is not. :/ (though like I said, they do use some of the 'anime' techniques for showing emotion... the distinct difference between Avatar and an anime is that Avatar's animation articulates words where as anime rarely (if ever) does.)

"Cartoons" are just as much "animation" as "animation" is "cartoons", like you said they technically mean the same- so I don't see need to create a practically imaginary difference between the two.

I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to point out, so I'm sorry if my reply is a little confusing as well? XD

Mmm my point was that they are treated differently, and that that's just the way things are in mainstream culture right now. :O

Ah. Well I do know they are, I just think it's sad. I don't think they should be.

I have to agree, because while I'm not interested in anime anymore, that means I simply don't keep up with anything new that comes out, but I still adore the old series I got into. So, in all technicality, I'm still an anime fan. Just one who's perfectly happy to stand by the old stand-bys.
