i know right lmao it's like everything in eva is intentionally put there to make otaku fans angry and i'm so confused as to how people don't get that

That was so not a Wisconsin bar. A Wisconsin bar would only be that empty at like, 2 PM. And even then you'd have a couple of old drunks occupying the corner barstools.

love this secret because once the music began and I was sitting in that theatre, it really /was/ like coming home.

Re: New Year's Resolutions!

[personal profile] perfidiousfate 2013-01-01 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't usually do resolutions, but I'll try some.

- write more fanfic (and not be afraid putting it up)
- read more books
- work hard at university (...this should be number one, shouldn't it)
- not lose contact with current friends/make new friends (including fandom friends...I have no idea how to make fandom friends :S)

And finally:
- read Homestuck (dear god)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for making me not the only person who knows about Trinity Wells.

I should write fic.

I find all foreign portrayals of Americans hilarious. Duo Maxwell, anyone? Jack Harkness? I want to put them all in a crossover and watch them bombast at each other.

IKR? What is exceptionally shocking (on a wonderful level) is their acceptance and non-issue with gay marriage/relationships and other races. Look at all the interracial relationships, and it NEVER comes up as a problem! EVER! SO many programs in the U.S. have people of non-pure-White lineage, but it's almost -always- played for laughs or at least brought up at some point.

In Midnight when that lady said she was on holiday because she and her lesbian lover had recently split, nobody batted an eye. It wasn't even worth focusing on. It was just there. It makes me ashamed of how stigmatizing Hollywood is.

Actually, the First Doctor was thrilled to land during the Terror. He loved the Revolution historically, said it was one of his favorite periods. He totally lives it up during that serial, too, that young punk.

...I lol'd. I can just imagine you, anon, sitting on a computer with a look of dawning realization as the puzzle pieces slowly slide into place.

But I'm glad you understand now, anon. :)

I don't have the best-looking body in the world too, OP, so I love to live vicariously through sexy women and their sexyfun times. That's probably why I don't care for maleslash - I can't really live vicariously through a guy.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I mean, there's like 600+ other nations in the world, why 95% percent of the time we only see what happens in just one country?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
You didn't get your comment Brit-picked - it's not "butthurt", it's "arse-injured", you fool!

Way back when I was a young fan in the LotR fandom, me and my friend discussed whether Thranduil would be hot in the movie, and whether that would quell the abusive!Thranduil trope.

...Now I'm not in the fandom so I have no idea whether that's even still around, but his perfect face makes me incredibly happy either way. Live the dream!
kruger: that show i hate except for ami because i like ami (➾〖AMI〗✘sup babe)

don't ever get a tumblr

Hah! I just realized Jack Harkness is a meta foreign portrayal of an American!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Understanding the cultural context and basis for problematic behavior is helpful, but handwaving problematic stuff as "different culture don't judge" doesn't help anyone and just lets entrenched problematic behavior perpetuate itself.
And since the secret is directed primarily at non-Japanese consumers of Japanese media, I don't see why talking about it on the internet is useless. I think the point OP was trying to make was about how non-Japanese anime fans believing that Japan is some sort of magical utopia of LGBT tolerance, and that belief blinding them to the cues in Japanese media that it isn't.

I feel like you're trying to say the same thing as the anon upthread, "it wasn't made for or about you so you don't get to criticize it," but more eloquently...

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-01-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have such conflicted feelings regard to Naoto

On one hand, as someone who's in 20s, and still have no fucking idea what my sexual orientation and gender identity really is, I like the idea that there's characters like Naoto who's not completely sure that they are trans. It touched upon the sexism in the society, the implication that if you are not sure, it's just flat out easier to be male. This is exactly how I feel yet I'm never allowed to talk about it. There is also the idea that it's okay to not fully know who you are yet. We don't always have all the answers, and that is okay too.

On the other hand. I absolutely detested the way the cast treated Naoto after it's announced that they were assigned female. Suddenly Naoto is "she this, she that", despite that they never officially announced that they identify as female. That was never, ever called out in the game.

It's cool to learn and explore about your identity message is amazing. It's uncool when the other message is that somehow it's okay to shove an identity on someone who is exploring right now.
