Ha, me too. But I feel the only way to get recced is to write ships that people want to read about in larger Yuletide fandoms and/or not write "Yuletide gen."

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "Yuletide gen?"

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
But I feel the only way to get recced is to write ships that people want to read about in larger Yuletide fandoms

I've been involved with yuletide from the beginning and it's always been this way. they say they encourage obscure fics. they don't. I can't tell you of one fic I've written for truly obscure fandoms that has ever been recc'd, even though anyone who's read it has said it was fabulous. it's a fandom hardly anyone has heard of and so it doesn't get recc'd.

but you can be the same thirty fics for the same large fandoms or crackass media bullshit fandoms get recc'd until they're driven in the ground.

Besides the rec issue, I get kind of tired of the constant "How can I get my large fandom into Yuletide?" game. For fuck's sake, you already have a bunch of fic, even if you think it all sucks. Meanwhile I'm trying to nominate fandoms with no fic whatsoever because I'd really love to see some...

Cry more, I know.

Which is hard when your giftee explicitly requested gen, which happens a lot.

Writing for a fandom of one is always fraught with longing. It's a bit frustrating, even if you write in a more popular (for Yuletide) fandom, too, because chances are someone else has written something even better. But that wishing to get recced... boy, do I know the feeling.

Really, really pathetic. Also, there has been two holidays in the last 8 days. You gotta expect slower traffic during a time a lot of folks are off with families/friends/loved ones.

Disagree. If you've put hours and hours of work into your Yuletide fic and you've gotten one comment and two kudos, it's very tempting to start looking around hoping somebody, somewhere liked enough to rec.

I love Yuletide, and I've had the fortune to have several of my fics get completely unexpected and amazing traffic, so I feel ya, OP. It's a great feeling. But I also love years like this one when not as many people read or commented on my story but my recipient really, really dug the story and I had a hell of a time writing it. :)

A lot of people do this. I don't, but that's because I don't know how to use tumblr. I googled the title of my Yuletide fic/fandom to see if my recipient was hanging out somewhere like Yuletide Coal and complaining about the typos. Four. There were four typos.

I had no idea Yuletide Coal existed. And that's after years of participating.

*goes to check it out*

Wow. That's amazingly petty.
*complaining about typos, not checking the YC site*

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Pathetic, maybe, but soooooooo normal.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Side-issue, but are you sure the fandom isn't anywhere else? If you click back to the main page of AO3 and then check for the fandom in the main archives, are there any non-Yuletide works there? I run a fairly active comm for a Yuletide-sized fandom, and I always spend this time of year a little frustrated at all the people who think that there's no fandom outside of Yuletide when there's so many wonderful non-Yuletide fics out there.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know for myself (nonsecretop) that my fandoms have one fic. mine.

I've looked. I've searched. There is nothing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I always wonder what these are. What are these fandoms that are so tiny?!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Books you loved as a kid are pretty rare for fandoms, quite often. Especially non series books.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've had frustrations with the fact that even when people are like "Wow, I've wanted fic for this fandom forever!" it has obviously never occurred to them to go looking very hard, and since a lot of Yuletide fics aren't written out of love for the fandom by the actual author rather than just to fill somebody else's wishes, it always seems unfair that those fics get more flaily attention from the fans than the non-yuletide ones do.
But there are definitely some fandoms where it's lucky enough to even get somebody through Yuletide who can write it and there really is nothing else out there.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I know this is mean of me, but I hate seeing mediocre, samey Yuletide fics for my fandom getting lots of support. There is so much better out there. I really wish Yuletide would tighten up their rarity requirement a notch so it really can be just about those truly rare fandoms - instead, they're talking about broadening their limit as AO3 archives get larger. God, and I just want my fandom to size out of it for good.

Nothing at all pathetic about it, nonny. I hope you find your fic there soon.

I didn't do Yuletide this year (did it from 2005-2011) but I did the same thing, every single year ... and while it always gives me a happy to be recced, as long as the recipient likes it all other non-commenting readers can go fart in a paper bag for all I care.

The yuletide lj is awash in recs right now. I mean - good lord, so many recs! So - good luck!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I felt hopeless about my fic but I did get nice comments and one rec on LJ. So... I feel better. But overall I'm not as into Yuletide as past years. The fic I received was lovely but I haven't been readying other stuff.

I know all that really matters is that the recipient liked it, but I was already pretty sure it wasn't so awful they'd complain.
