It's almost always the same for me. For being involved in fandom, that is; I adore many canons that I don't do fandom (with or without shipping) for. My love for the canon source is not an effect of fandom involvement, and fandom involvement won't show all the canons I love.

I think ascribing opinions and/or morality based on shipping is a major problem in fandom these days. Really, all you can reasonably tell from my ships are that I like those ships. They won't tell you:

a) My feelings about the canon

b) The reasons why I ship these pairings

So no, shipping can't tell you if a person is any sort of -ist, if they only ship because of porn, if they don't care about the source material, or what their tastes are outside of fandom.

Of course, I also like writing meta about why I love certain canons and pairings, and fanfic can definitely show the writer's thoughts on characters, if nothing else, but that's a lot more information than just saying "I ship it".

I agree about the problem of judgment-based-on-people's-ships/likings. Overall we've needed the upheaval of fandom integrating social justice concepts into what we do, but it's definitely given a lot of people the urge to impose simplistic ideological purity tests on each other. I think it's going to be a while before that kind of thing settled down/people explore these things in a more subtle way...
