it's ok, op. if you were alone, there would be more interest in gen. most fandoms are pairing oriented.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I saw the secret and thought, "Um, isn't that 90% of fandom?"

it is! but at the same time, i feel like there's also a lot of derision for shippers anyway. being a shippy person in fandom may be normal, but it's not ~kewl. one usually pretends to be immensely interested X or Z aspect of the source material more than their otp for some street cred & stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Or they might *actually* be interested in X or Z aspect more! *gasp* OMG DID I JUST BLOW YOUR MIND???

Eh, lots of people love shipping, so it's certainly not like you're alone. I tend to find ships in just about everything, so I guess I share your feelings. (Gen is cool too, but nothing makes me happier fandom-wise than finding a new ship.)

It's almost always the same for me. For being involved in fandom, that is; I adore many canons that I don't do fandom (with or without shipping) for. My love for the canon source is not an effect of fandom involvement, and fandom involvement won't show all the canons I love.

I think ascribing opinions and/or morality based on shipping is a major problem in fandom these days. Really, all you can reasonably tell from my ships are that I like those ships. They won't tell you:

a) My feelings about the canon

b) The reasons why I ship these pairings

So no, shipping can't tell you if a person is any sort of -ist, if they only ship because of porn, if they don't care about the source material, or what their tastes are outside of fandom.

Of course, I also like writing meta about why I love certain canons and pairings, and fanfic can definitely show the writer's thoughts on characters, if nothing else, but that's a lot more information than just saying "I ship it".

I agree about the problem of judgment-based-on-people's-ships/likings. Overall we've needed the upheaval of fandom integrating social justice concepts into what we do, but it's definitely given a lot of people the urge to impose simplistic ideological purity tests on each other. I think it's going to be a while before that kind of thing settled down/people explore these things in a more subtle way...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
bitch please

%90 of fandoms are all about shipping and mostly slash.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
These days, yeah, although which type of pairing gets the focus can vary depending on the fandom. Some are mostly het, or femslash.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
there aren't that many femslash fandoms, though. the only ones i can think of that are predominately femslash are Legend of the Seeker, Rizzoli & Isles and Bomb Girls. Maybe Xena or Warehouse 13 but i don't know enough about either fandom to be sure. Once Upon a Time, Grey's Anatomy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Glee are femslash-friendly but they're not femslash-dominated fandoms.

which has nothing to do with anything except that shipping in general tends to sway more towards het and slash than femslash

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Xena is huge with the femmeslash, although I don't know how active it is anymore. I wasn't in that fandom, but I've sometimes gotten the feeling that Xena/Gabrielle is to femmeslash what Kirk/Spock is to slash.

Warehouse 13 is not a big fandom, but the biggest ship is Myka/Helena, and then Pete/Myka.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Also Kim Possible. :3

And Storm Hawks is like one third het, one third slash, one third femslash, courtesy of a female main character who has fantastic chemistry with every other female character in the show, main villain included.

But, um, yes, femslash is the runt of the litter in general fandom. :(

Depends on the fandom. In some fandoms, mostly older ones, shipping anything (except for canon, and only if it doesn't "take over the story") will get you side-eyed or snubbed - especially same-sex shipping. However, these tend to be older and/or male-dominated fandoms. As with all things, YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please! Fandom shipping is NOT "mostly slash." I am so sick of this myth being perpetuated here. How many times do we need to pull out the long list of fandoms that are not "mostly slash"? Why don't this time we just start with Once Upon a Time? Or Castle? Or NCIS? Or Vampire Diaries? Any of these ringing a bell?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
how about you write a list of het-dominated fandoms and i write a list of slash-dominated ones and we'll see who's is longer.

or better yet the list can only include extremely prolific fandoms

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Extremely prolific fandoms"? I see, so fic writing is the only "real" type of fanning.

In any case.... Let's start with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Doctor Who. Harry Potter. X-Files. Stargate SG-1. I think you can safely call all of those extremely prolific.

Book fandoms are mostly het: Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson.

For cartoons, you have A:TLA and Legend of Korra. In terms of anime, you have Evangelion which, yeah, is old school, but it gets bonus points since there's canon gay.

I can't speak for the others, but even if Once Upon a Time's fandom is mostly het-oriented, it's not as though there aren't any popular same-sex pairings. It's just out of the ordinary because Swanqueen, the big slash ship, is a big femmeslash ship. And then there's Aurora/Mulan and Ruby/Belle. I'm mostly a het-shipper and I only sort of ship Aurora/Mulan out of those three pairings, but I think it's kind of cool to see a fandom that isn't all 'ew slash is icky' but doesn't worship dick on dick action either. Most of the mentions of guyslash are kind of jokey, like some snickering about Rumpelstiltskin/Prince Charming/sheep or drooling about Mad Hatter/Dr. Frankenstein/Rumpelstiltskin rockband AU slash.

This is me. :) Occasionally I'll be watching a finished show, get to the final episode, and then go "whelp, all my ships have been sunk. I guess that's that."

It's a serious problem sometimes, but for the most part, part of me liking the characters involves wanting them paired. No pairing, no interest.

/I'll be shallow with you and that's okay

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
yas. though i have this strange thing where i hate pretty much any romance stuff ever in tv/film, but my whole fandom experience is centered around ships.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way, OP. Though I watch plenty of shows without shipping anything, I'm not involved in those fandoms and the ones I am involved in, I tend to ship a LOT of different pairings. It's just easier/more fun that way :)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm like this too. Maybe it's a bad habit, but quietly shipping something makes me enjoy the story better in some cases.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh you poor shippers, unable to find any place in fandom where you can be accep--

Oh wait.
