These days, yeah, although which type of pairing gets the focus can vary depending on the fandom. Some are mostly het, or femslash.

there aren't that many femslash fandoms, though. the only ones i can think of that are predominately femslash are Legend of the Seeker, Rizzoli & Isles and Bomb Girls. Maybe Xena or Warehouse 13 but i don't know enough about either fandom to be sure. Once Upon a Time, Grey's Anatomy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Glee are femslash-friendly but they're not femslash-dominated fandoms.

Xena is huge with the femmeslash, although I don't know how active it is anymore. I wasn't in that fandom, but I've sometimes gotten the feeling that Xena/Gabrielle is to femmeslash what Kirk/Spock is to slash.

Warehouse 13 is not a big fandom, but the biggest ship is Myka/Helena, and then Pete/Myka.

And Storm Hawks is like one third het, one third slash, one third femslash, courtesy of a female main character who has fantastic chemistry with every other female character in the show, main villain included.

But, um, yes, femslash is the runt of the litter in general fandom. :(

Depends on the fandom. In some fandoms, mostly older ones, shipping anything (except for canon, and only if it doesn't "take over the story") will get you side-eyed or snubbed - especially same-sex shipping. However, these tend to be older and/or male-dominated fandoms. As with all things, YMMV.

Oh please! Fandom shipping is NOT "mostly slash." I am so sick of this myth being perpetuated here. How many times do we need to pull out the long list of fandoms that are not "mostly slash"? Why don't this time we just start with Once Upon a Time? Or Castle? Or NCIS? Or Vampire Diaries? Any of these ringing a bell?

In any case.... Let's start with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Doctor Who. Harry Potter. X-Files. Stargate SG-1. I think you can safely call all of those extremely prolific.

... and mostly old-school, some close to inactive, like The X-Files. A show from the early 90s? Come on. Not to mention that in the case of SG-1, Jack/Daniel is the top dog pairing.

There really hasn't been any recent het juggernaut source material to rival the likes of SPN/Sherlock/Avengers/Teen Wolf/Merlin/SGA/Inception/cinematic middle earth in quite a while.

I think you'd find that really hard to prove, especially since the Sam/Jack shippers are still going strong and Jack/Daniel kind of died out around the time RDA left the show.

And I maintain that fic production isn't the only judge of the size of a fandom. Chuck fandom was large enough to achieve notoriety for their save-the-show efforts, yet the amount of fic they produced could fill a tablespoon. There are lots of current large popular het fandoms out there right now. Grey's Anatomy. Bones. Vampire Diaries that I already mentioned. OUaT is new but rapidly growing. Tiva and Caskett have legions of followers. Don't judge everything off the AO3 fic stats.

Oh and I can't believe I forgot this, but could I call your attention to a minor little thing called "Twilight"? (Not that I'm endorsing it, but...no one can say it's not a "het juggernaut".)

There's also Hunger Games - also big. Also het.

Book fandoms are mostly het: Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson.

For cartoons, you have A:TLA and Legend of Korra. In terms of anime, you have Evangelion which, yeah, is old school, but it gets bonus points since there's canon gay.

Oh, and I forgot about Gossip Girl where Chuck is canonically bisexual in the books and Dan is bicurious. I mean, this was erased by the TV show, but still. Chair is the most popular pairing by far.

Eh, there's more in anime, but basically, if it's shoujo, it tends to be a het-heavy fandom, if it's shounen, it's slash-heavy. There are obvious exceptions like The Big 3 of Shounen Jump (Naruto, Bleach and One Piece) all have het-heavy fandoms. Then there's series like DNAngel which was a slash-heavy fandom.

It really matters what is the male:female ratio in a title when it comes to if it's a het-heavy or slash-heavy fandom.

I'm not denying they're mostly about shipping. I'm denying they're mostly about slash. Yes, there are a lot of large slash fandoms out there. But there are also a lot of large het fandoms as well.

And NCIS? Have you been hiding under a rock? Really? You are really not aware of the Tiva craze?

I can't speak for the others, but even if Once Upon a Time's fandom is mostly het-oriented, it's not as though there aren't any popular same-sex pairings. It's just out of the ordinary because Swanqueen, the big slash ship, is a big femmeslash ship. And then there's Aurora/Mulan and Ruby/Belle. I'm mostly a het-shipper and I only sort of ship Aurora/Mulan out of those three pairings, but I think it's kind of cool to see a fandom that isn't all 'ew slash is icky' but doesn't worship dick on dick action either. Most of the mentions of guyslash are kind of jokey, like some snickering about Rumpelstiltskin/Prince Charming/sheep or drooling about Mad Hatter/Dr. Frankenstein/Rumpelstiltskin rockband AU slash.

No, yes, you're absolutely right. I was understanding "slash" as used by the person I was responding to to mean m/m slash, but yes, OUaT is very femmeslash friendly. I should have clarified. It's just a big fandom that has very little m/m slash - it's mostly all het or femmeslash.
