maybe not OP necessarily, but i've seen plenty of fandom people make fun of people who like to go out and party or things like that. usually they mock them for "trying to be cool" or imply it's pathetic that they "need other people". i've also seen them say that those people are shallow or wasting their time by doing something apparently worthless/without a deeper meaning.

I've definitely seen that, too, but it seems kind of crappy to rant at the OP when their secret didn't come off that way at all. Then again, I know some people just get sick of getting crap over it, just like a lot of introverts get sick of people giving them crap over how they like to spend their time.

yeah, i think childings should have directed her comment to the general audience and not the OP. however, i can understand her frustration. i'm an introvert, but my fandom friends have made some pretty mean-spirited remarks on the times that i do decide to go out and party. sometimes i kind of want to snap too.

Yeah, I'm an introvert, too, but I have quite a few extroverted fandom friends and I've seen them have to deal with snobby attitudes about liking to go out in the past. Luckily this is mostly from outside people, though, and my fandom friends are all pretty chill about just doing whatever. I can understand how it would be frustrating, though. Fandom is sometimes kind of the inverse of non-online life, with extroverts getting crapped on instead of introverts.

totally agree to the last sentence, and not just with introverts/extroverts. there are lots of groups of people who are "cool" or "accepted" irl that fandom loves to sneer at, probably for that same reason. it's interesting, actually, to see the inverse.

That's very true! It's the kind of thing you see in a lot of areas/hobbies that are seen as kind of nerdy in general, this idea that being "different" makes you better than all those norms who like things like... sports. (Sorry, I've been working on my thesis for 12 hours straight and I think I used up all my words and this is the only example I can think of. Despite the fact that sports has its own fandoms. UH, JUST GO WITH IT.) It's stupid because a lot of those people don't necessarily have it better or easier for the things they like (and liking that stuff doesn't exclude you from being a nerd or liking nerdy things), but fandom and nerd culture in general sometimes tend to have a persecution complex. People should just stop being crappy to each other all around.

persecution complex! yes, those are the exact words i was looking for with all my tl;dr roundabout rambling. since nerds (is that even the right word) tend to get picked on by society, they defend themselves by attacking the "mainstream" (is that even the right word either). and as a further extension, it can be a defence mechanism so that doesn't hurt so much when those people insult them because they kind of look down on those people.

(i'm on-and-off in a sports fandom so i get what you mean lol. there's a divide between different types of sports fans though. and also, good luck with your thesis! don't let it eat you.)

oh god, this. i'm generally pretty introverted but have long since gotten over that stupid attitude of "well *I*!!! don't need to get drunk or fuck around to have fun and those who do are dumb and suck and just can't find better ways to entertain themselves!" but many of my friends online haven't.

so basically... i never mention it. i'd rather just not be online for a day or two because "eh, long story", than tell 'em i was out and that i was drinking (and that i loved it!) and be judged by them.
