You mean it isn't happening? (The explosion, I mean - I guess The Silmarillion really is unfilmable at the moment anyway, if only because, well, Christopher Tolkien.)
I like the pairing but I'm not sure I'd want the fandom to be even more skewed towards Maedhros/Fingon. Then again, with films... maybe they'd cast the right/wrong actors anyway and you'd end up with, I don't know... Orodreth/Mablung all over the place!

The Silmarillion would be filmable if you used the extant material as a story outline and just wrote the damn screenplay. Screenplays, because it's that long. It's not even a proper novel, it would need a lot of adaptation.

And then the purists' heads would explode and the fandom would devour its own intestines.

Even apart from exploding heads and What Is Clearly The Right Interpretation of X and Y And What Is Wrong, one of the things I love about the Silmarillion is that there is no screenplay, no one version of what happened and how characters felt, and what they said etc. (except maybe for The Children of Húrin). I like to read various interpretations. And sometimes I want to eat a fellow fan's intestines because clearly are Wrong and I am Right (in my opinion) but that's part of the fun and I don't actually eat people's intestines anyway.

I once heard someone say that the Silmarillion ought to be done as something similar to the Animatrix - a series of short films by different people.

Almost any ship in the Silmarillion, unless it's interspecies, is almost certainly incesty. They're all fucking related in some way or the other.

BTW, doesn't anybody else find it creepy that Elrond gave away her daughter to the descendant of his brother? I mean, sure they're the most purrfect, preshuz men, the closest to the glory of Valinor and the Elves and whatnot, but it's the Numenorean royal bloodline, your effing brother's progeny. DO NOT WANT.

It would have to be done as a series, and an awkward series at that since they'd have to recast the show every few episodes. I do have some hope, though. American Horror Story is breaking some ground with the idea that you can have a continuation of a series without using the same characters or setting.

Anyway, that's the way I see it working, because the thing about Silmarillion is that it isn't one story, it's a whole bunch of stories, and they are all extremely sketchy and would have to be filled out a great deal in order to make it work on the screen.

Maybe it's unfilmable, since it's more about building up the mythos then telling a straight out story, but I'd think it would make for an awesome video game.
