FANFIC post Part 1 & 2 (hopefully I posted this correctly)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-01-04 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Relationships
•‘/’ (forward slash) is used to denote a romantic pairing. [ex. Steve/Tony]
•‘&’ or ‘and’ is used to denote a friendship or family pairing [ex. Sam & Dean]

•Het or Hetero: used to signify a heterosexual relationship
•Slash: used in western fandoms to signify a homosexual relationship (femslash is sometimes used for lesbian relationships)
oThe use of the term slash originated from the Star Trek fandom. K/S to signify a relationship between Captain Kirk and Spock (or Kirk SLASH Spock).
•Yaoi: used in anime and manga fandoms to signify a homosexual relationship (yuri is used for lesbian relationships)
oSeme: used to describe the dominant half of a male-male relationship (stereotypically the seme is taller, older, more physically dominant)
oUke: used to describe the submissive half of a male-male relationship (stereotypically the uke is smaller, younger, more physically weak)
•Order of Names: Some writers will use the order of names in a pairing to tell you which character is the dominant or seme or ‘top’ [ex Joe/Bob, Joe would be the dominant partner in the relationship and when having sex]

Genres
I am not going to list all the genres (that would take forever). But here are some common ones that may be confusing.

•A/U or Alternate Universe: A fanfic that changes some aspect of the canon material.
•Crossover: When two or more fandoms are combined into a story. [ex. John and Sherlock meet the Doctor]
oFusion: sometimes called a crossover, a fusion is when characters from one fandom are imported into the settings of another. [ex. A Supernatural/Avengers fusion in which Dean Winchester is Iron Man and Sam Winchester is Captain America]
•Genderbend: a story that changes the gender of some characters [ex. Bob is now a woman]
•Crack: used to describe a fanfic with a bizarre premise. [ex. Character X is turned into a squirrel]
•Fluff: Feel good, happy ending stories
•PWP: Used for either Porn Without Plot or Plot? What Plot. Used originally for stories that consisted of little build up (Plot? What Plot). It is now more commonly used to mean Porn Without Plot, or a story whose plot is about sex.
oAnime and Manga fandoms may also use the terms lemon or lime to note that there will be a sexual scene in a fic (but it is not necessarily a PWP).
•Kink: fics that generally focus on one or more sexual kink (desire). Will be discussed more in-depth below
•‘!’ (exclamation point): used in two ways.
oThe most common is used to emphasize a character trait. The format is trait!character [ex. smart!Dean or blind!Frank]
oThe less common use is to describe what kind of story a fic it is [ex. crack!fic or wing!fic]

oops I commented below but then you moved it.

This looks great to me, really clear. Couple of things I'd like to add, though:
-you might want to specify that 'lime' refers to softcore/non-explicit sex, whereas 'lemon' is explicit.
-I think it's standard in fandom to use 'kink' to refer not just to sexual kinks but also narrative and emotional ones. Eg. most people refer to hurt/comfort as a kink.
-I've seen 'genderswap' used more often than 'genderbend'. 'Rule 69' is another term you sometimes see, especially for art (and it conveniently dodges any wank associated with the distinction between sex and gender).

as anon below said, I had the number wrong - it's Rule 63, not 69.

I think you mean rule 63, not 69?

it is 63

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-01-04 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Just to note. In my word documents there will be bolding and italicizing. Also, for example I am using nuetal names OR characters/fandoms from the most prevalent fandoms I know of (in this case Supernatural, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and Star Trek)

It looks good so far!

Also, something just occurred to me: might be worth mentioning fanon vs canon; examples: Since when is Sephiroth of FFVII a General? Where did the Notice-Me-Not spell in Harry Potter come from? Why are these characters "going into heat"? They're male! What the fuck is the Omegaverse? Superhusbands? Etc.

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-01-04 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I will prob add the definitions of canon vs fanon. The 'heat' 'omegaverse' will be in the kinks. Things like Superhusbands and such are too narrow of a topic (only relate to the avengers), and i prob won't cover. I will try and add something at the end about how each fandom has their own little inside jokes (Superhusbands, Red Pants Monday). BUT I will add a part on how ships [woops should add a definition of ships] are named (usually).

oh, yeah, that is what I meant! I named those as examples because they were the only big fandom things that came to mind, sorry

Anyone know any other 'weird' genres that may need to be added?

Re: FANFIC post Part 1 & 2 (hopefully I posted this correctly)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not really "weird", but you didn't include genfic in your genre list, so there's that! Maybe you could also add darkfic and hurt/comfort fic, since they're both such ubiquitous genres? (Maybe kidfic too? IDK if it's common enough to warrant a mention, but I've seen it in a lot of fandoms.)

And you might want to add an explanation of the difference between OC and OOC since a lot of newbie fanfic writers seem to get those terms mixed up.

And I think it should be noted that fluff is also sometimes called WAFF ("Warm and Fluffy Feelings").

I will add kidfic because that has two meanings (character as kids OR characters with kids). Darkfic I am abit unclear of what the definition would be. Hurt/Comfort I know. I might add genfic (is it self explanatory or...?). I don't want to add genres that people will know what they are by the name (Romance, Humor, Drama, Angst, etc).

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Gen probably should be self-explanatory, but I've encountered a surprising number of people who thought it was interchangeable with het, or that it just means "fic that isn't slash". Even though the proper definition is more like "fic that isn't primarily focused on romantic relationships of any kind".

As for darkfic, I think the fanlore article explains it pretty well: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Darkfic

"Joe/Bob, Joe would be the dominant partner in the relationship and when having sex"

this is interesting and should be discussed

Discussed how?

Re: FANFIC post Part 1 & 2 (hopefully I posted this correctly)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but I think what AYRT was getting at is that a lot of fandoms no longer use the top/bottom order when listing pairings. Also, dominant =/= top?

Re: FANFIC post Part 1 & 2 (hopefully I posted this correctly)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
This is op. Can't log on because I am in my kindle. I agree that this isn't seen that often anymore. Nor do I particularly believe that the dominant person is always the top. But I have noticed that the fandoms most likely to use the top/bottom convention are anime and manga fandoms which also use the seme/uke distinctions. Of course,if the use of dominant partner is problematic I will remove it (but keeping top). I have not been in an anime fandom in several years so this may have changed.

I'd say probably stick with top rather than dominant, since that's usually what's being indicated. Less chance of stepping on a bit of a sticky topic that way. I know what you mean about anime and manga fandoms, though, and it is still seems to be prominent there. I haven't been heavily involved in those for a few years, either, but I think that's still the case. A quick check of ff.net or AO3 will probably show if it's still true.
