The one night there are a bunch of secrets about The Hobbit is the one night I choose to go out on a date. I tell you, I should be a shut-in. For this having a social life, I need to respond to secrets.

Anyways, everybody has already mentioned Bofur, Ori, and Bombur, but I'm going to take it a step further. The three in your picture are loved because they're hot and ~oh so cooooool u guise~. That's not a bad thing, but it's pretty much the only reason fandom likes them.

Bofur is loved because he's funny and charming and because there's a picture of him leaning out of a barrel and he looks like he should have a tail to wag. Bombur is loved because he's funny and still manages to be pretty hardcore despite being a smidge on the chubby side. Ori is loved because he's funny, he's the baby brother, and he's brave/crazy enough to fight a troll with a slingshot.

The Kili fans will move on when the next beefcake appears. The Bofur fans are here to stay.

IDK, I think that's a little unfair because not everyone likes characters for the same reason. I'm not saying there aren't people who like Kili just because he's attractive (I know they exist), but that's not everyone that likes him.

I always liked him in the book because he was spirited and had a good sense of humor. Fili too, actually. They were optimistic and fun loving, loyal and adorable. They have similar personalities in the movie, which appeals to me. Their appearances certainly don't hurt matters, but that isn't the main reason I like them. I know there are other people who feel the same.

(Same for Thorin.)

+1

None of the three in question are my favourites in the movie, but I do really like all of them. Yeah, I think Aidan Turner is attractive, but I like Kili because he has a fucking adorable personality. He's a bit slow to catch on and terrible at insults and fun and overly enthusiastic, and I have a long history of loving that kind of character. I would've loved him no matter what he looked like. And Fili's fantastic too, just as fun as his brother, if somewhat more skeptical and mature. And I've been a fan of Richard Armitage for years, so of course I was going to like him as Thorin, but I also loved Thorin in the book and the Rankin/Bass cartoon where he's, you know, decidedly less hot. For me, I'm quite focused on personality rather than looks, and I think other people are the same, although I know not everyone is. It's always frustrating to have to defend my love for a character just because I happened to connect to someone who was attractive.

And even if people do like these characters for being attractive, I think that's okay. I don't understand why we need to shame people for finding someone hot. I'm reminded of back in the day with Lord of the Rings. I had several friends who got into the movies because they thought Orlando Bloom was hot (and, in one case, Craig Parker). There was a lot of squeeing and oh-god-he's-so-sexy, and while that's not why I was into the movies, it didn't hurt me. And it was nice to be around people enjoying something I loved, even if our reasons were different. And while some of those people did move on, some of them didn't. I ended up having some of the most in depth Tolkien conversations I've ever had with a couple of those girls, something that never would've happened if they hadn't first got into the fandom to flail over some dude's hotness.

That's a wonderful description for Kili, holy crap. Haha. And I agree, as long as the movies kept his personality the same, I would've loved him. (And I have a lot of complicated feelings on Thorin, but I DO love him, so I'm not going to ramble on that. But yea, agreed again.)

For me, I'm quite focused on personality rather than looks, and I think other people are the same, although I know not everyone is.

I won't lie and say that I can't be shallow, but when it comes to characters I care about personality, too. The most beautiful asshole of a character is still an asshole, and their looks aren't going to sway my opinion. Same for gorgeous boring characters. (And every other combination.) The conclusion that people jump to upon seeing that you like an attractive character is unfortunate, because you can like a character for who they are or find something fascinating about them and still find them attractive. (Or, hell, maybe you don't find them attractive at all. I'm sure there are people out there who don't find Kili hot. Everyone has different tastes.)

I don't see what's wrong with it either, for reasons you've already explained. And like you mentioned, just because they got into the fandom or source material for a hot guy doesn't mean they won't come to appreciate it in a way they didn't before, and become a big fan of it on it's own right. Even if they don't...that's one other person you can discuss the material with. Which imo, is always a good thing.

Haha wow excuse you.

Maybe a lot of us love Fili and Kili because of their relationship with Thorin, and their fierce loyalty to him--to the point where they died for him. Or maybe because they're funny and spirited. Or maybe because they kick ass at fighting. Or maybe because they're genuinely kind to Bilbo (even if they do like to tease him). Or maybe because they're some of the youngest and most naive of the dwarves, despite both being royalty and therefore next in line for the throne, and we think that makes them interesting. Or maybe all of the above.

Acting like one group of fans is more special or "true" than another group is really silly imo.

I didn't mean to imply that one group of fans is more special than any other. It's just that in my observation, the fans who squee over how hot an actor/character is tend to move on more quickly. As you pointed out, there are certainly other reasons to like Fili, Kili, and Thorin. Thorin's level of determination is admirable, and Aiden Turner has good comedic timing.

I would argue that Fili and Kili were not very nice to Bilbo. "Go fight the trolls and get back those ponies that we lost. We'll be right behind you!" Lies. All lies.

Anyways, implying there was a ranking or hierarchy of fandom was not my intent. I appreciate sexy men as much as the next girl.
