I tried a few of them. Even the "plotty" and "thoughtful" ones creeped me the fuck out. And they don't turn me on at all. I think I'm missing the appeal. I really don't mind a bit of dub-con, but there's no thrill if nobody involved is aware of how rapey it is?

This! I have tried to read a few but I never get far.

You're misunderstanding: EVERYBODY who like a/b/o is aware of how rapey it is. That's the whole point -- they like dub-con-ish sexual stuff that is so problematic due to real-world issues that it interferes with their ability to enjoy it.

So, instead, they create a fictional alternate universe where "no no yes" is valid, not being able to control one's urges is a biologically sound excuse for rapey behavior, it's possible to enjoy being fucked without proper consent, extreme domination/submission doesn't reflect poorly on the characters' personalities, and being desperate and begging to be fucked doesn't mean the woman omega is someone with loose morals or no self-respect -- they just literally can't help it.

It is basically a way to indulge in innocent fantasies about dub-con/non-con tropes that many, many people fantasize about, but without this tiresome "reality" getting in the way, because not everyone can separate rl issues from fantasy as easily as other people can.

... Isn't that in some ways making it worse, though? I mean, it's not saying that wanting to be fucked or wanting to engage in D/s are okay choices to want to make, it's saying that the only excuse this universe could come up with for them was to remove the element of choice. How is that supporting the desire to engage in D/s or enjoying being the bottom, when essentially it's saying that they're only excusable when biology overrides sense?

It just seems to me that that set-up would be re-enforcing the idea that these things are things that reflect on your character and you shouldn't enjoy them freely.

Yes of course, if you think about it deeply, but that's not what it's purpose is. It's purpose is to be an easy shortcut to being able to FANTASIZE about dub-con situations that turn you on without having a bunch of icky rl thoughts niggling at you and interfering with your ability to enjoy it. It's handwaved by "alternate universe, different rules, no1curr".

It's shallow, and everyone knows it's shallow, but it's enough to make them able to indulge in harmless porny fantasy. It's not supposed to be deep or meaningful or politically correct or empowering. It's a tool for making porn happen guilt-free, like sex pollen or Aliens Made Them Do It or pon farr.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
... I would argue that any fantasy publicly posted stops being harmless, since it is then interacted with and therefore sends a message whether it wants to or not. But I suspect that's a different discussion.

That aside, though, obviously in some cases the whole 'no irl thoughts niggling at you' backfired with this one, since it seems to have provoked very mixed reactions when people actually did pause to think about it. It gives an air of attempting to excuse some things that don't necessarily need to be excused (D/s, bottoming), and other things that really shouldn't be excused (non-con), which I'd think is actually more harmful that just a straight-up fantasy involving non-con/dub-con that's acknowledged as such.

Dude, this is fascinating. See, I come at this from the EXACT OPPOSITE side.

it's possible to enjoy being fucked without proper consent, extreme domination/submission doesn't reflect poorly on the characters' personalities, and being desperate and begging to be fucked doesn't mean the woman omega is someone with loose morals or no self-respect

How is enjoying extreme domination, or wanting sex even when you know you shouldn't, problematic? Isn't that HOT? Isn't that was fiction is for??

Biological determinism scares me SO MUCH MORE as a feminist and a human being than frank portrayals of sexual submission. It is literally the most horribly dystopic thing I can think of, to be a woman who's entire life is dictated by my uterus. I understand what you're saying, anyway. It's like an extreme case of different people having different sensitivities.

This. So much. That's basically the crux of it for me too.

It isn't THE MOST HORRIFYING THING OMG! to me, but it's way up there. I said upthread it's like the set-up to a horror movie--I like some questionable power-play stuff, but a/b/o doesn't disgust so much as scare the shit out of me, and it's definitely not a turn on.

This plus infinity.

I took them to mean that everyone in the a/b/o WORLD doesn't know how rapey it is... like, I know that the fans of it know that, but an omega who accepts his or her subordinate role... or even if they don't but the whole society around them exists to tell them they're wrong...

Well, where's the fun in that? I mean, I get that people like that, I would never knock that! But I want my dub-con/non-con to be UNDERSTOOD to be transgressive according to societal norms, even if the characters themselves have decided to toss those norms out the window. I like my deviants to be actually, you know, DEVIANT. As in, different from everyone around them. As in, they have to be fucked up or screwed with in some way to get to the point where they see their non-con 24/7 lifestyle as something that is totally okay and preferable. If a rapist is basically just being a good citizen in his world by doing his duty impregnating his omegas... well, n o p e. I back-button without prejudice.

Making a deviant form of sexuality normative just simply does nothing for me. It's not even the wrongness of it that bothers me... it's just simply NOT HOT. But of course, to each their own. I would never ever criticize someone who is into a/b/o for finding it hot in ways I don't. I figure it's just because I don't get it, that's all.
